At the start of this term, Monotype invited NTU students and visitors to the Alan Kitching and Monotype Celebrating Five Pioneers of the Poster exhibition at Bonington Gallery, to design and enter their very own monogram into an online competition.

We received over 40 creative entries, all inspired by the Alan Kitching Collection . Entrants created a monogram using their own initials, which had to be rendered in such a way that it was unique to the designer. One letter had to be a typeface used in the Alan Kitching Collection.

Judged by Alan Kitching himself, the winning monogram was created by Year Two BA (Hons) Graphic Design student, Tim Saunders. Alan told us: “The winner of the monogram design competition is ‘TS’, because it’s in keeping with the spirit of the original concept, and is the simplest and most interesting from the use of colour and textures.”

Winner Tim was able to choose a limited edition print from the Alan Kitching Collection as his prize. He said: “It was such an honour to be part of the project!”.

Because of the standard of entries, Alan also chose two runners-up; in second place was MA Textile Design Innovation student Jasmine Watts and in third place was Wen Yee Kok, final year BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design student.

Alan told us: “The second place is the ‘WJM’ because again, it’s within the brief, very striking, and a good use of colour. In third place is Wen’s which has a nice use of the over-printing technique and subtle use of colour. All have a very nice use of combination of the individual letters. The overall response to the competition was very encouraging and all entries had something worthy.”
