A large number of matches involving Nottingham Trent University teams in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) leagues took place in week five, and despite the wet weather interfering last week, the skies were clear and the pitches glorious this time round!

There were 55 games scheduled for action on Wednesday 18 November, with 29 at home and 26 away. Of these matches, NTU won 43.4% of them (23 from 53 completed). Our season win percentage stands at 44.44%.

Biggest result

This category can stand for the team that won by the greatest margin, or alternatively can be for the result that means the most in context.

Some weeks one result stands out as a clear winner. It was a tough decision to make this week, however, with loads of results making their claim for the "biggest".

Women’s Basketball and Women’s Lacrosse both posted huge victories over their opposition, NTU Netball first team beat Worcester 47-45 and Men’s Volleyball beat the team at the top of their league, while NTU Men’s Rugby Union first team claimed a win away in Scotland and Men’s Rugby Union's sixth team ran rampant with only 15 players.

After much deliberation, due to the nature of the opposition faced and their dominant victory without dropping a set over a team at the top of the league, we chose Men’s Volleyball for the award.

Team performance

This category can be won by anyone – team, players, or sports clubs – for overall performance as a group.

As we wrote last week, beating a struggling team is not as big an achievement as defeating one at the top of their game. Worcester Netball fall into this second category. They were undefeated to date, having beaten all other teams in the league, including NTU earlier in the season.

But in turning this result around, NTU have proven they can learn from a loss and overcome it – all without a paid coach in place. This work was therefore done by the team and players and is our Team Performance for games on Wednesday 18 November.

Next week sees a number of knockout games and big match ups. Check out our BUCS Preview on Tuesday 24 November for further details.
