Lynn Saunders, the Head Governor of HMP Whatton, Nottinghamshire, is to receive an honorary degree from Nottingham Trent University.

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Edward Peck will confer the degree at a graduation ceremony at the Royal Concert Hall on Saturday 28 November.

Lynn will be named a honorary Doctor of Social Science, in recognition of her significant contribution to the treatment and rehabilitation of sexual offenders, both nationally and internationally, and to the ultimate aim of a reduction in victims.

In addition to her role as Governor of HMP Whatton, Lynn is the founder of the Safer Living Foundation (SLF), a charity created with the help of Nottingham Trent University researchers to help prevent sexual reoffending. She is also a trustee for Prisoners Abroad, the only UK charity caring for the welfare of British prisoners in foreign prisons.

Lynn extends her support to pioneering research, which includes a unique collaboration with psychologists in Nottingham Trent University’s Sexual Offences, Crime and Misconduct Research Unit to research sex offending and sexual crime.

Professor Peck said: "It is an honour and privilege to award Lynn Saunders with an honorary degree in recognition of her tremendous achievements as Governor of HMP Whatton, one of Europe's largest prisons for sex offenders, and as the founder of the Safer Living Foundation.

"Lynn presides over a truly innovative and pioneering prison that is successfully rehabilitating sexual offenders and creating best practice worldwide. The SLF charity has received international acclaim for its work on preventing further victims. It is a unique partnership between the prison and the university, with several of our staff sitting alongside Lynn on the trustee board."
