NTU's Play for Fun programme is an exciting timetable of sessions designed to get people active on a fun and casual basis. Find out all about the sessions we run in our new regular feature.

Whether you are a student that has never tried basketball, are looking to pick it up again after some time away, or would like to continue playing the sport on a more casual, non-committal, and less competitive basis, NTU's social programme is the one or you. Social basketball sessions give students a great opportunity to meet new people, develop their skills, and get active all in a fun and relaxed environment.

Sessions run at both Clifton campus and the and City site. The Clifton campus session runs on a Tuesday from 7.30 pm - 9 pm in the Lee Westwood Sports Centre. Over 100 different students have taken part in this session throughout term one. New players are always welcome so come along and get involved!

One of the most passionate coaches we have at NTU – Tee – delivers the session at Clifton. Tee is keen to welcome players of all abilities and does a great job of making them feel comfortable and welcome at the sessions. He told us that he enjoys coaching because he gets to "see new faces at his sessions and watch and help them develop their basketball skills and grow in confidence as both players and students."

So far this year there has been an average of 24 players attending the City session between 9 - 10:30 pm on a Thursday in the City sports hall. The most regular attendee of all students so far this year – Alvin – told us that he really enjoys "meeting new people with common interests, in an environment in which we can all feel comfortable". Alvin said "since I started attending social basketball sessions last year, my passion has grown and I am now finding myself playing basketball on a daily basis – I can't get enough!"

On Thursday 26 November, an end of term 3-v-3 tournament took place at the Lee Westwood Sports Centre. Six squads of three/four players took part in the competition, which ran in a round-robin format, culminating in a final stage showdown. Congratulations to all of those that took part in what was a competitive tournament played in a great spirit.

One of our female competitors talked to us about how she enjoys playing "with a range of abilities and personalities" and personally loves the "friendly contest with the lads". She was also keen to talk about Tee who she called "a great coach who helped me improve my game in a year to be able to play on the Uni team in just my second year ever playing the sport."

Particular congratulations go to Sed, Samuel, Adetokunbo, and Chinua who were our overall winners and now proud owners of our highly sought-after 'Play for Fun' t-shirts. You too can win yourself a 'Play for Fun' t-shirt by attending any social session on our timetable four or more times during the entire academic year!

NTU's basketball ambassadors ran the event and we spoke to one of them. She told us of her "great passion for basketball" and how she loves her role to be able to "pass this passion on to whoever I can; I want to get as many people participating as possible." Remember you don't need to sign up or commit to every social basketball session; just turn up and play!

We have 20 play for fun sessions that run throughout the week in a variety of sports. Visit the Play for Fun webpages to view the timetable and follow NTU Play for Fun on Twitter for regular updates.
