While in his final year on our BA (Hons) Photography course, Tom Illsley was announced as the winner of a bursary sponsored by Genesis Imaging. He was awarded £1,000 and a solo exhibition at Nottingham Lakeside Art Centre.

Genesis Imaging is a leading supplier of photographic printing, professional mounting and bespoke framing service. The company is a long-standing supporter of NTU’s BA (Hons) Photography course and offer help with production, advice and mentoring to our students.

Tom was awarded the bursary for his Degree Show work, a series called Meridian which explored geographical centre points throughout Great Britain. The award has enabled Tom to further develop his practice and given him the opportunity to exhibit his work at Nottingham Lakeside Arts Centre in April - May 2016.

Being awarded this bursary has given me confidence in my own work and abilities to continue growing as a photographic artist.

Tom explained the concept behind his work, saying: “Meridian is a photographic project exploring geographical centre points and the surrounding land throughout Great Britain. Through deeper research I discovered that in 2002 Ordnance Survey carried out an investigation into geographical centre points of the United Kingdom, using the method of centrography. This factual information inspired me to document these previous non-descript areas of land and to explore whether they hold a deeper contextual meaning.

"The work I have created for the 2016 exhibition is a photographic documentation of the geographical centres of England, Wales and Scotland.”

Genesis Imaging commented: “Tom’s dedication to his work and his considered investigation of the British landscape made him a strong candidate for the bursary awards from the moment we met at the discussion sessions that we offer students to offer feedback on their work and aid in its progression. Meridian was a clear choice to support through this bursary and we very much look forward with seeing how the series progresses and is presented at Lakeside Arts Centre."

Tom told us: “Being awarded this bursary has given me confidence in my own work and abilities to continue growing as a photographic artist. I knew that the work I was producing at NTU was good and I was very happy with it, but having that confirmed by industry professionals is incredible."

You can see Tom’s solo exhibition at Nottingham Lakeside Arts Centre between Saturday 9 April and Sunday 15 May 2016.
