Our Final Year BA (Hons) Fashion Communication and Promotion students have recently started work on an exciting live project with independent magazine subscription company, Stack.

Stack's objective is to bring independent magazines to readers in a cheap and easy way, and subscribers can expect a monthly delivery of the latest edition of one of the world's best independent magazines. You never know what you're going to receive, but it's something you probably wouldn't have otherwise come across.

The live project was one of seven that the students could choose from as part of their year-long module. Other options included Paul Smith, Boots, All Saints, Futurelab, L'Oreal Brandstorm, and Stephen Jones millinery. Live projects are a great opportunity to the students to gain real-world experience with industry, experience an on-going relationship with an industry client, and to develop their teamwork skills.

Working in teams of three, the students were challenged to edit and design their own independent publication. They had to devise a brand new stand-alone niche publication and propose a way to fund it. The students were responsible for every element including all written, visual, communication, and promotional aspects.

After initial briefing in October, the students will present their progress a number of times to their peers, a team of course tutors, and a representative from Stack. A final presentation will take place in May, which will be in the style of a launch event for the students' magazines. The students will have to consider visual display and interactive elements to bring their publications to life, and create a media pack. Alongside their teamwork, each student will also submit an individual visual research document.

Paris Decaro is one of the students who chose this project, and told us: "I love it. It is so open and we are given loads of leeway to do whatever we like. That's the beauty of the brief – they encourage you to be as niche and individual as you like. This has reinforced our creative juices and challenged us to open our minds."
