Fashion Marketing and Branding study trip to New York

Our BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing and Branding students have recently enjoyed a six day trip to New York.

Our BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing and Branding students have recently enjoyed a six-day trip to New York. The optional study visit was designed to give the Year One students a taste of the American market, helping them to gather research for their coursework.

Their itinerary included a visit to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) where the students viewed an exhibition called Denim: Fashion’s Frontier. They then had the opportunity to visit either Coburn Communications, a PR and communications agency, or MFA Marketing and Public Relations, to get a perspective of what it’s like to work for major brands and successfully launch them in the American market.

Student Emma Mitchell told us: “I was particularly excited to go to the PR agency and find out what it is that they do, as well as being able to see how they differ to companies in the UK. Apart from that I was very excited to take in all of the sights and the fashion!”

The students also had the opportunity to go on a walking windows tour, where they were guided along 5th Avenue to look at and learn about the visual merchandising within stores. As part of this tour the students had the chance to speak to employees at luxury department store Lord & Taylor, and the Head of Social Media at Saks.

There was plenty of free time for the students to explore the city, which included visits to places such as the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, and Central Park.

Emma added: “I had an amazing time! I think the real highlight of my trip was going to the Brooklyn Bridge. I loved the city and thought it was amazing to be able to walk over the bridge and take in all of the amazing views. I also loved all of the different shops there as well as being able to look at the different people and fashion that was around.”

Whilst on the trip the students were encouraged to visit cultural hotspots such as galleries and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD).
