New degree apprenticeship to develop talented managers

Companies looking to recruit and train high calibre talent and develop their aspiring managers are being encouraged to sign up to the government-backed Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship, which is being provided by Nottingham Business School.

Companies looking to recruit and train high calibre talent and develop their aspiring managers are being encouraged to sign up to the government-backed Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA), which is being provided by Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University.

Inspired by Nottingham Business School's sponsored degree programmes with blue chip companies such as Boots, Experian and Rolls-Royce, this new degree apprenticeship has been developed by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), the Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS), employers and higher education providers.

The course consists of mainly work-based learning with university study blocks. Organisations will benefit from the degree’s focus on the application of learning and the transferal of skills back into the business. Work-based reflective assessments can also be tailored to suit the requirements of different sizes of organisations from across all sectors

Companies which join the programme have the option of recruiting new apprentices to their organisation or developing their aspiring managers who do not already have a degree.  Students also gain the professional recognition of Chartered Manager (CMgr MCMI).

Funding for up to two thirds of the cost of the CMDA is available through the Skills Funding Agency for eligible apprentices.

Nottingham Business School has over 15 years’ experience in delivering work-based degrees. Its BA (Hons) Business Management (In-company) (BABM) course, launched in 1998, has a 100% graduate employment record, with students working in companies such as Toyota, Tesco, Barclays, Boots and Rolls-Royce.

Dean of Nottingham Business School, Professor Baback Yazdani, said: "We were the pioneers of in-company degrees when we launched BABM 16 years ago - a format which is now being backed by government as the future of business education. Now we are one of only a few higher education providers in the UK who have been selected and approved to deliver this innovative work-based programme in partnership with the CMI."

Nottingham Trent University also offers apprenticeships in Food Technology and will soon be offering Construction apprenticeships.

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, the panel event will give local businesses the opportunity to understand the changing landscape of apprenticeships, discuss the levy, and find out more about how the changes will affect them.

Topics will include how the levy will apply to their business, how to access funding, how to encourage more young people to become apprentices, and how to use apprenticeships to develop skilled trades and professional staff.

Joining the panel will be Paul Johnson, employer & delivery services manager at the Skills Funding Agency's National Apprenticeship Service; Stephanie May, apprenticeship and access to work programme manager, Boots UK; and Janette Graham, technical learning and development manager, 2 Sisters Food Group (whose brands include Fox’s Biscuits, Goodfellas Pizza, and Matthew Walker).
