NTU Graphic Design winners in On the Cards competition

Congratulations to our Graphic Design students who have been successful again in the On the Cards competition, winning Gold in both categories.

Congratulations to our Graphic Design students who have been successful again in the On the Cards competition, winning Gold in both categories.

The competition is run in partnership with greeting cards company Paper Rose, retailer Paperchase, paper supplier G.F Smith, and card manufacturers The Sherwood Group. It aims to raise awareness of the vibrancy of the greeting card industry amongst the student population, and to encourage the most talented designers into choosing greeting cards as a potential career path.

The brief was to create an innovative greeting card that could be put into an envelope and posted to a recipient. The students were asked to challenge the perception of what a greeting card could be, and to consider new format. They also had to consider what occasion the card was for, and it’s position at retail.

The students submitted their designs in one of two categories. Design / Illustration looked at the best use of illustration, character, typography, photography or graphics. Format / Innovation / Technology looked at the best use of new innovative ideas in formats, paper engineering or new materials and / or interaction with new technologies and media.

Winning the Design / Illustration category was Natalie Palmer and Ellie Broatch with their Dots & Dashes range, and Jessica Tarling who was Commended.

Winning the Format / Innovation / Technology category was Jennifer Offley for her Recipes range. Emma Canlin was also Highly Commended and Lucy Cripps was Commended.

Natalie, Ellie and Jennifer will each receive a cash prize of £250 plus a minimum of a week’s work placement with Paper Rose / The Art Group. They will also receive £100 towards a G.F Smith Make Book, and the opportunity to have their designs put into production and stocked in Paperchase.

The judges were very complementary about the work and commented on the high standard of the work submitted by NTU’s students. A representative from Paper Rose commented: "I would like to congratulate you and your team at NTU for producing the Gold Award winners in both categories and for the very high quality of work that was submitted. NTU have this year again produced a body of work that is both professional and innovative and this was noted by all ten judges. Congratulations and Well Done!"

On the Cards ran for the first time last year, with two NTU Graphic Design students named as winners of two of the three categories. Vickie Robinson won the Design / Illustration category, and Lucy Featherstone picked up Gold the Format / Innovation category. Both students saw their designs go into production and sold on the high street.
