Our BA (Hons) Fine Art students have recently exhibited their work at Nottingham's Surface Gallery as part of their annual NTU Festival.

As If By Magic saw eight selected Final Year students showcase their work through four week-long exhibitions. The students took their practice into the dark arts with the creation of new work that explores illusion, alchemy, and the mesmerising.

Kasia Kotlarska, from Surface Gallery told us: "The students are absolutely amazing and very professional. They are very confident about what they want to achieve and what is the best way to do it. We - Surface staff - are there more as support, making sure they have everything they need to produce their work."

In Wayfaring Heather Hodkinson and Bella Milroy explored notions of contemporary pilgrimage, distance, materiality and human connection.

For Surface Living Molly Ashton and Theo Gilmour-Rees transformed Surface's Project Space into a glamorous advertisement for utopian living option.

Samantha Jade Mallabone and Trixy Griffiths presented The World Reillustrated / Reconstructed. Working with staged text and sculpture the artists addressed the mesmerising occurrence of association in the human psyche.

Magick LTD (Reece Straw and Aaron Clixby) moved their headquarters into Surface's Project Space. This agency practices Chaos Magick, providing an unique and hybridised service that mixes elements of PR, self-help, marketing and lifestyle coaching.

Surface Gallery is one of Nottingham's foremost contemporary art galleries, set up by a group of NTU Fine Art students in 1999. It is an independent, volunteer run organisation which supports the professional development of early and mid-career artists, curators and people wishing to work in the arts.
