The NTU Men's Hockey team had been without a varsity win since 2012 and the spectators were anticipating a good game, producing a carnival-style atmosphere during the teams' pre-match drills.

Straight from push back, UoN went on the attack, which NTU managed to deal with. The game continued in the same fast tempo, and NTU had the better of the first twenty minutes with a few attacks but no clear sight on goal. UoN then started to bring the game back into the balance, and both teams had chances to get the opening goal.

The eventual breakthrough came just before half time when a UoN attack down the left resulted in a long corner. The ball was played to Sorsby at the top of the D, who turned his marker and made it 1-0.

UoN started the second half like they finished the first when a short corner came to Gandhi, who swept the ball in for 2-0.

There were then ominous signs for NTU with UoN forcing keeper Adams to produce several saves. However, the tide turned with a yellow card to UoN, and NTU made the most of the one-man advantage. After going close at a short corner, it became 2-1 when the ball came to the back post to get swept in.

Again, UON's ill-discipline let them down when another yellow card proved costly - NTU got two short corners, and the second was hammered home by Proctor with ten minutes to go.

It was then time for NTU to get on the wrong side of the officials, as a green card was followed a few minutes later by UoN's third goal from Ruiz after a goal-mouth scramble.

A yellow card to NTU then seriously hampered their chances of an equaliser with a few minutes to go. Because they were having to throw players forward, they were susceptible to counter-attacks which UoN just couldn't finish.

The final whistle blew to cheers from the green and gold contingent who continued their unbeaten varsity run. The score line was an accurate reflection of how close the game was, with UoN just making the most of their opportunities.
