Year One students on our BA (Hons) Fashion Management course have recently taken part in a visual merchandising live project with department store John Lewis.

The project was part of the students' Consumer Behaviour module, where they were asked to analyse John Lewis' customers' behaviours and buying traits through primary and secondary research. They then had to use this research to design and propose a suitable window display that would attract customers into the store.

The students' submissions were judged by James Cordin (PR and Marketing Coordinator), Debora Sutcliffe (Operations Manager Fashion), and Louise Law (Community Liaison Coordinator).

The winning team produced the theme Every Summer has its Story, created by Zita Summerton, Wenhui Ji, Frances Johnson, Ella Tarrant, and Laura Weekes. The students spent three days designing and dressing John Lewis' largest window display at their Nottingham store. The students' design included a selection of accessories attached to wooden pallets to complete their summer theme.

Winning student, Zita Summerton told us: "It was such an amazing opportunity! Seeing our design concept actually come together into an actual display was incredible. The experience was everything and more, nothing like I had ever done before! Being part of all the excitement and hard work that goes into the role of the visual merchandisers is something that I will never forget."

The John Lewis team were also impressed by another group's work, created by Daniel Brace, Jemma Hayhoe, Leah Johnson, Lily May-Suteau, whose theme was Retro Tropicana. The students were asked to create a second display within the store itself.
