NTU student Asher wins Marketing Week Live's Visitors Choice Award

BA (Hons) Product Design student Asher Erskine recently won the Marketing Week Live Visitors Choice Award, together with a placement with one of the event sponsors.

BA (Hons) Product Design student Asher Erskine recently attended Marketing Week Live 2016, on behalf of the British Promotional Merchandise Association (BPMA). Asher won the Marketing Week Live Visitors Choice Award, together with a placement with one of the event sponsors.

Last year Asher won first prize in the BPMA competition, which was open to UK-based undergraduate design students who were tasked with creating exciting, inspiring, and truly original new product ideas for promotional merchandise. In order to win, Asher presented his designs at the Museum of Brands in London to five judges, who included the editor of Design Week magazine and the director general of the BPMA.

After the presentations, Asher was awarded the Design Innovation Award from the BPMA and received £600 plus the opportunity for his designs to be manufactured. Asher was taken for a day at a top London creative agency, and his competition success and designs have been featured in Design Week magazine.

Asher told us: "My design was a flat-pack binocular made of waterproof and tear-proof plasticised paper for durability. The body of the binoculars can include any graphics or images a company desires, and separate to that there is a sleeve that can also have logos and sponsors printed on to it. The idea is that the sleeve slides off, and the paper is scored, which means it can pop into shape and the plastic lenses fold up and click into place. The main idea that I pitched was to use the binoculars at London Zoo, as you could put the map on the body of the binoculars and the barcode on the sleeve, replacing the ticket."

After lots of great feedback on his work from the BPMA brief last year, Asher was invited down to Marketing Week Live to display the best designs from the project. During the event, members from industry commented on the professionalism of Asher's work and the standard of all the work from NTU. Visitors were invited to vote for their favourite design from 55 that have been exhibited over the last few years. Asher's design received the most votes, and won Marketing Week Live’s Visitors Choice Award.

Asher told us: "Afterwards, a member of Matrix APA (one of the event sponsors) invited me down to London. They liked my design so much that they have offered me a placement and are looking into taking my design into production.

"It was a massive surprise that I won – I didn't think my name was going to come up. It was a big relief too after all the hard work, along with travelling to London. It was really gratifying to have recognition for my work, and it felt really rewarding. It was also good to see so many other students' work getting recognition too."
