On Monday 15 August, Professor Azrini Wahidin from the School of Social Sciences, welcomed 38 criminology students from the University of Toronto to a day long conference on Hate Crime: Policy, Practice and the Impact of Hate Crime on Everyday Life.

The students are taking part in a University of Toronto Summer Abroad programme located in Worcester College, Oxford. Speakers included Paul Giannasi, Lead on Hate Crime at the Ministry of Justice, Sgt Neil Radford of the Nottingham Police On-Street Prostitution Team, Daniela Scotese, a sex worker outreach provider with POW Nottingham, and Sam Hope, founder of Trans Hub and who talked about the Hate Crime experienced by Trans and non-binary persons.

Dr William Watson, who teaches in the Criminology and Sociolegal Studies programme at the University of Toronto, and who is responsible for the students' programme in Oxford, congratulated Professor Wahidin for providing an outstanding learning experience for the students.

"The students really appreciated the programme Professor Wahidin has organised. They are studying criminal justice policies in the UK and Canada and the speakers were able to share with them cutting edge developments in England and Wales."

Dr Watson hopes the students' visit to Nottingham Trent University, following on from a similar conference at NTU last year, will be the start of closer links between the programmes in Toronto and Nottingham. The event was supported by the Department of Sociology.
