Recent BA (Hons) Fashion Knitwear and Knitted Textiles graduate Rosella May was the winner of this year’s Graduate Fashion Week International Residency Award.

The Award, now in its third year, plays a key role in internationalising the Graduate Fashion Week programme and at the same time promoting the importance of emerging talent in the fashion industry. It gives graduates from UK universities a chance to take part in a residency where they will work with local designers, universities and craftspeople in a country with an emerging fashion industry. The 2016 Graduate Fashion Week Residencies are part of the British Council’s Indonesian Fashion Forward Programme, which launched back in 2012.

Rosella was chosen after having showcased her final degree work at Graduate Fashion Week in June this year. The collection aimed to raise awareness of how denim can be produced in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way, while still maintaining the fabric’s characteristic properties.

Rosella travelled to Indonesia where she created a collaborative collection with fashion brand SOE Jakarta for Jakarta Fashion Week 2017, the leading fashion event in Indonesia. The collection was also chosen to be showcased at Korean trade show, Fashion Kode in Seoul.

Rosella commented that, “To be chosen was really a special honour for me. The experience overall was amazing, meeting designers, dressing models, bowing at the end of each catwalk show and taking part in interviews for fashion channels. I’m also really grateful to Sendy and Monique from SOE Jakarta who gave me the opportunity to explore and understand the culture of Indonesia and also for allowing me to contribute fifty percent towards the design work for their Spring/Summer 17 collection. It was a real learning curve for me as well. It opened my eyes to how fashion weeks are run and how much work goes into them. The overall experience will stand me in good stead."

During her 3 months abroad Rosella was also able to meet Japanese Fashion writer, Yu Masui and also visit Seoul during its Fashion Week.

Rosella’s collection was also showcased in China at SpinExpo in September.

Rosella has now relocated to Amsterdam, where Calvin Klein’s Europe office is based, to take up a new position as a junior denim designer.
