NTU students receive placement awards

Three NTU students have been recognised for their outstanding achievements while undertaking a year-long placement, as part of the annual NTU Placement Awards

Three students have received Placement Student of the Year Awards as part of the 2015/16 NTU Placement Awards.

The awards are presented annually, with nominations being submitted as part of an evaluation process undertaken by employers.

Employers who recruited an NTU student for a year-long placement, are contacted by the University and asked to provide details on the successes of the student, as well as feedback about their experience.

As part of the evaluation, employers were also given the option to nominate the student for a Placement Student of the Year Award – which recognised when a student has flourished throughout year and gone above and beyond what was asked of them.
This year, three students stood out above the rest and were presented with the award, in recognition of their hard work and dedication:

Matthew Jesson
BSc (Hons) Mathematics

Matthew carried out his placement at Telefonica UK Ltd (O2), working as part of the Human Resources team. Matthew took a role within the People Strategy & Change area of the team and due to his success in the role, his placement was extended by a further two months. Matthew received the NTU Placement Award for working in a large organisation.

Lesley Cummings, who supervised Matthew during the placement said:

“Matt exceeded expectations during his time at O2. From starting as a shy and quiet individual, he quickly grew in confidence and soon became indispensable. Matt is smart, hardworking and conscientious. He was a brilliant asset to the team. Everyone he came into contact with and did work for, feedback that he was great and appreciated the work he did for them. I genuinely don't know what we would have done if he had not been there. Matt was genuinely a great loss when he left to complete his final year.”

Timothy Parmenter
BA (Hons) Business Management and Accounting & Finance

Timothy carried out his placement at Nottingham Trent University’s Finance Department where he worked in several areas. Due to Timothy’s exceptional performance in his last two months, he was given the responsibility to work on a project for the Head of Finance and Planning. Timothy received the NTU Placement Student of the Year Award for NTU Finance.

Gemma Jarvis, Head of Finance and Planning at NTU had this to say:

“Tim has done some sterling work for me with limited steer and minimal input from myself. He has really owned the project and seeking clarification and feedback in a manner that belies his years. He has also taken this opportunity to relate theories he learnt in lectures to see how they could be applied in practice. I was very impressed by both the quality of work, his level of diligence and his professionalism.”

Stephanie Leake
BA (Hons)Furniture and Product Design

Stephanie carried out her placement at Jack Badger Ltd, where she contributed greatly to the team in the workshop - helping them to see things from a newer fresher perspective. Steph excelled herself significantly and now has one of her designs shortlisted in the Wood Awards 2016 in the Bespoke furniture category. Stephanie received the NTU Placement Award for Small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) organisation.

Ben Naylor, who supervised Stephanie during her placement, had this to say:

“It has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience having Steph with us. We have discussed the possibilities of her returning to us and she has inspired us to take on another placement student this year. I commend Steph thoroughly and believe she will do very well in the design and manufacture industry - whichever path she may take. She is thoroughly missed by all at Jack Badger.”

To celebrate their success, Mike Carr, Pro Vice- Chancellor for Employer and Economic Engagement, presented each of the award winners with a £100 gift voucher at an awards ceremony held on Monday 12 December 2016.

Two of the three students were placed into the nominees for the National Undergraduate Employability (NUE) Awards, which celebrates excellence in undergraduate employability.
