Our Year Two BA (Hons) Fashion Management students have recently visited Florence to attend international yarn tradeshow Pitti Filati. With Florence being declared as the world’s fifth fashion capital by Vogue in 2015, this optional four-day study trip gave the students the perfect opportunity to explore the city’s luxury retail environment and gather research for their coursework.

Their itinerary included a visit to Pitti Filati, where the students were able to observe the studios and yarn exhibitors trading. Pitti Filati is one of the key events in the international calendar for yarns for the knitting industry. Held at the Fortezza Da Basso in Florence, the show attracts a global audience of buyers and designers from the biggest names in fashion, all looking for creative inspiration.

The students also had the chance to attend a fashion-focused walking tour. Their guide provided them with an insight into the history of Italian fashion, and pointed out some of Florence’s luxury boutiques and bespoke stores. The tour ended at The Museums of Florence, where the students were encouraged to visit the Costume Gallery.

Student, Una said: "The trip to Florence was a great experience! It was an opportunity to observe the city from a fashion perspective. Visiting Pitti Filati meant gaining an insight into the business world of fashion and learning more about the creative process of range building. The city tour was a unique learning experience as we were presented with the fashion history of the city. There was enough time to explore the places of personal interest and plenty of tourist attractions to choose from. One last point - Italian food!"

Acting Course Leader Julia Kininmonth told us: “Attending Pitti Filati is an excellent opportunity for students to experience an accessible European trade fair which exhibits innovative and luxury yarns for the global fashion knitwear market. Mingling with textile suppliers, international agents, buyers, merchandisers and designers from the fashion industry gives the students real insight into the design and product development process, inspiring them in their future career choices.”
