Our BA (Hons) Fashion Management students have recently enjoyed a six-day trip to America’s fashion capital, New York. The optional study trip was open to our Year Two students, giving them a chance to experience New York’s world-renowned fashion culture, and helping them to gather research for their coursework.

Their itinerary included a holiday windows walking tour, where the students were guided along 5th Avenue to learn about the visual merchandising stories behind some of New York’s most impressive Christmas window displays. As part of this tour they had the chance to speak to employees from Coach’s flagship store, a luxury accessories and lifestyle fashion company. They also took a trip to Lower Manhattan, where the students viewed an exhibition called BPD EXPO 4.0 (Blueprint Denim Exhibition). This gave the students an insight into the current trends and the future of denim in the industry.

Student Zita Summerton commented: “We were lucky to have a tour around the Garment District with a designer and were given a live project in a fabric store. We also had the chance to speak to two bloggers; it was so interesting to hear about their journey to success.”

Whilst on the trip the students were encouraged to visit various other denim and textile showrooms including Twin Dragon and Level 99. There was plenty of free time for the students to explore the city, which included visits to places such as the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park and of course, lots of Christmas shopping!

Zita added: “The buzz, excitement and fun New York has to offer is like no other city. Not only do you get to spend a week in one of the most amazing cities with your course friends, but being fashion students you pick up on what’s going on in the industry just by looking in various stores - you cannot get that experience anywhere else! New York hosts a great blend of events which allows you to keep up to date with the fashion industry!”
