Help NTU complete the 90kg Rice Challenge

To celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight, NTU is taking part in the 90kg Rice Challenge. Come along to the NTU market to buy some delicious rice to help us send a Malawian child to school for a year.

To celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight, from Monday 27 February to Friday 10 March, NTU is taking part in the 90kg Rice Challenge and we need your help. Come along to the NTU markets at Clifton, Brackenhurst and City campuses to buy some rice and support the fair trade movement.

We have ordered 180kg Kilombero white and brown rice, and will be selling 1kg bags at £3 each. This is the amount of rice sold that would enable a Malawian farmer to pay for a year's basic secondary education for two children.

Where can I buy some rice?

Come along to the NTU Markets and find our special Fairtrade stall where you will also be able to try some other fantastic Fairtrade products. During Fairtrade Fortnight, the NTU market will be visiting all three campuses:

  • Clifton Campus Plaza - Tuesday 28 February, 11 am - 3 pm
  • Brackenhurst Campus - Thursday 2 March, 11 am - 3 pm
  • City Campus, Union Square - Tuesday 7 March 11 am - 3 pm

If you can't make it to one of the markets, you can also pick up a bag from Clifton Student Services, Clifton Library, Brackenhurst Library, Boots Library, City SU and Sports Centre, SCCO (50 Shakespeare St) and Admissions in Dryden. Or contact the Environment Team and we can deliver bags in person or via internal post (for staff only).

Why are we doing the challenge?

NTU is proud to be a Fairtrade University and we are always looking for new ways to promote Fairtrade on campus. The 90kg challenge is a great way to show how the products we buy can have a massive impact on the lives of the people who produce them.

Kilombero rice is grown by NASFAM, the largest independent, smallholder-owned membership organisation in Malawi. It provides training, farm inputs and a fair price for their products. This enables members to work their way out of poverty and give them the opportunity to improve the lives of their families and community.

For more information about the 90kg Rice Challenge and where to pick up a bag of rice, please contact the Environment Team.
