On Saturday 18 February, the NTU Brass Band travelled to the Harrogate International Centre to compete in Unibrass - the world’s only university brass band competition. The band competed against nine other bands in the Unibrass Shield section and were placed fourth overall with a fantastic score, positive comments from the adjudicators and a trophy for the best percussion section!

Each band had 20 minutes to impress the two adjudicators and every performance was marked out of 150 with 100 points dedicated to musical quality and 50 to entertainment. The NTU Brass Band were delighted to receive 119 points overall with 41 for entertainment.

The NTU Brass Band’s 20 minute programme featured music from around the world, opening with the impressive brass band march, Army of the Nile. The next piece, Karl Jenkin’s Lament for Stabat Mater, featured euphonium soloist and NTU Finance Assistant, Joel Moore. The band’s third piece, Elgar Howarth’s Berne Patrol, demonstrated the band’s precise playing and excellent dynamics. The Berne Patrol effectively faded away and segued into the fast paced, swing groove of Louis Prima’s Sing Sing Sing. The NTU Drumline joined the Brass Band during the piece and performed an exciting and well-choreographed routine on stools.

The British Bandsman magazine summed up the NTU Brass Band’s programme, commenting: “Smiles all round as they take their bow and leave the stage - a stylistic and controlled programme that Trent should be very pleased with!”

Overall, the NTU Brass Band and NTU Drumline enjoyed a fantastic weekend and are already looking forward to Unibrass 2018.

Both will be performing their Unibrass set on Thursday 23 February at 7.30 pm in the Old Library, Arkwright builing.
