Saturday 25th March – Rugby League. FT: Nottingham Trent University 22 – 18 University of Nottingham
After all the build-up, Notts Varsity 2017 finally got underway on Saturday afternoon, with the Rugby League kicking things off at Lady Bay. The weather was perfect and a busy crowd was all set for a great game of Rugby League.

It only took a few minutes for NTU to make their mark, with a break from Dan Harrison leading to a try under the posts for Matt Holroyd. He then converted his own try to make it 6-0 – what a start!

NTU were next on the scoresheet to consolidate their strong start, with Adrian China scoring in the corner on 15 minutes. Another successful conversion took the lead to 12 points.

University of Nottingham reacted well to the second try and managed to get on the score sheet themselves mid-way through the first half. The half-time whistle went and it was 12-6 at the break.

While the teams got together for their half-time team talks, the crowd were treated to a fantastic performance from NTU Cheerleading, which went down very well in the beautiful afternoon sunshine!

The second half got underway and it was a close affair for the first 10 minutes or so, with both teams making a few errors. However, it was the green and gold of UoN who struck first, dotting down in the corner. Unable to make the conversion, the score stood at 12-10 to NTU.

The next score was all important, and NTU bounced back almost immediately to further their lead. Another try was scored, this time from Alec Wheatley, but the conversion was unsuccessful.

Another 10 minutes passed, with UoN desperate to make a dent on NTU’s lead, but the boys in pink held strong. Ben Farlie scored their fourth try of the game from the ruck, to make the score 22-14 with just 15 minutes to play.

With just six minutes to go UoN managed to get over the try line for their third try, but couldn't make the conversion. A cagey last few minutes followed but NTU were able to close out the game to win 22-18. A massive result for the team and their first Varsity win since 2013 – well done lads!

Sunday 26th March – Volleyball. Women’s: Nottingham Trent University 0 – 3 University of Nottingham
After a fantastic start to Notts Varsity for NTU, it was the turn of NTU Volleyball on Sunday at the Lee Westwood Sports Centre. The women were up first at 12pm, followed by the men at 3pm.

The Women got off to good start, with the score at 3-3 in the first set. However, UoN showed their strength and quickly cruised to a 13-5 lead. The first set finished at 25-7.

The second set was a lot closer, with NTU very much in it at 21-14. It was a valiant effort but they were overhauled 25-16. In the must-win third set for NTU, the scores were level again at 13-13, but they didn't quite have enough on the day, and the game ended 3-0 to UoN.

Sunday 26th March – Volleyball. Men’s: Nottingham Trent University 0 – 3 University of Nottingham
In the gap between the men’s and women’s games, the crowd were treated to a great performance from Funky Fresh Collective.
Similar to the women’s game, NTU started strongly but were unable to prevent UoN from taking the first set 25-18. However, the lads built some all-important momentum going into the second set.

NTU took a 9-8 lead before a time-out was called and they managed to build on their lead to take it to 20-17. Unfortunately they weren't able to close the set out, with a great comeback from UoN edging them into the lead at 23-22. They went on to win the set 25-22, making it two sets to nil to UoN.

The disappointment of giving away their second set lead was apparent, and NTU struggled to get going in the third set. UoN capitalised on this and quickly got themselves into a 7-1 lead. NTU needed a massive comeback from this point, but it wasn’t to be and UoN went on to win the third and final set 25-12.
