Year Two BA (Hons) Fashion Design student, Melissa Mehrtens, has secured a place on GAP Inc.’s prestigious ten-week Summer Internship Programme. She will be working at their head office in New York, from June to August this year.

The programme is designed to give current students a challenging and hands-on experience in the retail industry. It recruits from design schools from all over the world, and last year’s Nottingham Trent University (NTU) students performed outstandingly, filling three of the eight places available.

It’s the opportunity of a lifetime for Melissa, who will receive a competitive salary for the duration of her internship, and have her flights, visas, and accommodation all paid for by GAP.

Melissa, who will be based in the GAPFit department, told us: “Our live project involved designing three outfits for one of the GAP departments to a theme of our choice; I chose GAPFit, their sportswear section.

“As I was fresh off a semester spent at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, I was completely in love with the city. I decided to base my designs on a theme influenced by my experience of New York, in a collection that would be designed for New Yorkers, and hypothetically be sold exclusively in GAP’s NYC stores.”

She added: “Honestly, it was one of those moments where I couldn’t quite believe it. It’s the best feeling to have positive feedback on your work from people in the industry, and of course to be going back to New York!”

We asked Melissa what she was most looking forward to, and she remarked: “I’m really excited to be working in a live industry environment to design and develop garments that, hopefully, will find their way into stores!”
