Celebrating the innovations of new starters in local businesses

The Ignite Your Idea showcase was the finale to Nottingham Trent University’s Innovation Community Lab, a free programme of business and professional development events. Innovation Community Lab is exclusively offered to new starters (those with less than five years’ work experience) in local small and medium sized businesses.

The premise behind Innovation Community Lab is to equip new starters and recent graduates with the business acumen they need to kick start their career in a small business. Research has shown that new hires can require further support and development in essential soft skills for the workplace. According to AGR, only 11% of university graduates possess negotiation and influencing skills, and only 15% are commercially aware.

Ignite Your Idea showcased the innovative new ideas those enrolled on the Innovation Community Lab put into practice in their organisation. There was opportunity to network with other local companies and hear presentations about fresh ideas and new thoughts for taking local businesses to the next level. Delegates enjoyed an inspirational keynote address by prominent businesswoman Penny Power OBE, founder of The Business Café. Penny spoke about the importance of inspiring others and yourself to take on new challenges and adapt in a changing business landscape.

Ignite Your Idea showcased the innovation and enterprise happening across the D2N2 region and shared best practice across a range of industry sectors.

The next round of Innovation Community Lab takes place in Nottingham and in Derby in July 2017. For further information, email emmie.studencki@ntu.ac.uk.

Innovation Community Lab is part of the Enabling Innovation programme. Enabling Innovation is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and supports small and medium sized enterprises in the D2N2 area.
