Three students on the BA (Hons) Fashion Communication and Promotion course at Nottingham Trent University have recently been to Paris to represent the UK in the World Finals of the L’Oréal Brandstorm competition.

To give some background, the annual competition run by global brand L’Oréal, is described as ‘an innovation competition like no other’. Over the past 25 years, 95,000 students from 58 countries have participated in the experience and each year 15,000 students take up the challenge.

The brief for 2017 entailed the development of a campaign designed to disrupt men’s grooming through life-changing innovation. Participants were challenged to use intelligence, know-how and creativity to come up with a ground-breaking concept.

After getting through the UK selection stages in April 2017, Tara McGovern, Olivia Gascoine and Chloe Newton presented their response to the brief and were declared overall UK winners at the London final. This win saw them heading to Paris in June, where they competed against the rest of the world.

In Paris, the team took part in various challenges, including the reworking of their visuals for their original project with professional agencies.

When asked about the experience, Tara McGovern said: “The experience of participating in the L’Oréal Brandstorm competition has been invaluable; meeting industry experts, improving our presentation skills and working as a team to reach the world finals in Paris has been so exciting, and has really prepared me for working life.”

Chloe Newton added: "A highlight for me has definitely been receiving our feedback from L’Oréal at the UK competition final; it's great to hear how our work and executions appeal to the industry.”
