Justin King Visits Nottingham Business School
Justin King former CEO of Sainsbury's delivers a talk to NBS students on Changing responsibilities of business in the 21st century
Justin King CBE, former CEO of Sainsbury's, attended Nottingham Business School to deliver a lecture themed on: Changing responsibilities of business in the 21st century.
Justin was the CEO of Sainsbury’s between 2004 and 2014 where he led the business through a major turnaround, leading to nine years of profit growth. Before joining Sainsbury’s, he held prior roles at Marks & Spencer, PepsiCo and Mars in a thirty-year career, spanning consumer goods and grocery retailing as well as being a member of the Public Interest Body of PwC.
On Friday 3 November, in an NBS Lecture Theatre, Justin delivered a lecture which explored questions such as “What are business leaders accountable for and who are they truly accountable to?”, “Are we seeing change or are business leaders repeating mistakes of the past?” and “What can businesses do to regain the trust that has been lost in them and to ensure a sustainable future?”
As part of the Leadership and Employability modules covered in all final year Undergraduate courses, Tom Spencer, Principle Lecturer of Accounting and Finance arranged the event so Justin could share advice and key career learnings, developing students' understanding of adaptable and sustainable leadership.
'It was really interesting to hear Justin King's thoughts on the current business environment, covering other issue areas and how to approach the solutions' - Laura Jowett, BA (Hons) Business Management and Accounting and Finance
Tom said ‘It was a privilege to welcome Justin to Nottingham Business School, delivering his lecture to both students and staff. He provided a thought provoking insight into some of the most pressing issues facing modern business and challenged current thinking. Justin highlighted the importance of embedding values within the organisation. He left students with the message to be authentic to themselves and challenged them to try and build better business through their careers.’
As part of Nottingham Business School's events and development programme, a series of Business Leaders lectures are delivered, attended by both NBS staff and students.
