Final year BA (Hons) Fashion Design student Andra Nistor has recently been named winner of a fashion illustration competition organised by luxury fashion store Young Ideas. The award-winning retailer for men and women, which has stores in Ashbourne, Derby and Lichfield, launched the competition to celebrate 50years since the opening of its first store.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the team at Young Ideas were looking for a talented local designer to create fashion illustrations for a unique range of commemorative items, which will be produced and available for purchase in their stores this season. All funds raised from the sales will be donated to Foundation Derbyshire, an independent charity which supports voluntary and community groups across the county.

Andra entered the competition with her bold and vibrant womenswear illustrations. Both delighted and humbled to be named winner, she told us: “Winning came as such a surprise! As a fashion design student I am used to making fashion illustrations for my own work and incorporating my own designs, but I have never done any commercial illustrations. I found it quite challenging to find the right style, colours and poses to make an illustration that would attract customers.”

She continued: “I am so happy to have had the chance to be part of this beautiful celebration. One of the most important things I have learned by entering this competition is that even if sometimes you don’t believe you can do something, give it a try; you might surprise yourself!”

Laura Simpson of Young Ideas said: "We were so impressed by all the entries we had from students for our ’50 Years in Fashion’ illustration competition. However Andra’s design was so unique and in keeping with our brand image. We loved the bright colours as well as the feminine style of the model in the illustration. Congratulations to Andra and we wish her all the best of luck for her final year of study!"

In addition to receiving one of each of the products to feature her designs, Andra was also awarded a £200 Young Ideas voucher and 2 VIP tickets to their 50th Year Gala Ball taking place later this year.
