Building Surveying student named a top ten finalist at the 2018 TARGETjobs Undergraduate of the Year Awards
The prestigious awards, held annually, recognise outstanding undergraduate students and their extra-curricular commitment to their subject area.

Second year BSc Building Surveying student Bella Platts was named as a top ten finalist at the recent TARGETjobs Undergraduate of the Year.
The prestigious awards, held annually, recognise outstanding undergraduate students and their extra-curricular commitment to their subject area.
The competition is designed to test students’ academic excellence, initiative, creative and problem solving skills, and written communication and interpersonal proficiencies; all necessary to complete the assessments and be successful in industry.
Participants were required to undertake a series of rigorous online tests and personal assessments, designed by CEB, before successful candidates were invited to an assessment centre at Laing O’Rourke’s headquarters in Dartford, Kent. Bella excelled throughout and was shortlisted, and invited to attend the final awards ceremony at East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf, London which took place last week.
The nomination rounded off a fantastic 12 months for Bella who won last year’s University's Women in the Built Environment Award that resulted in an internship with Gleeds. After initially spending 10 weeks working with Gleeds' Project Management team, Bella was offered a placement position at the company.

“The last twelve months have been amazing, I cannot believe I was a finalist in the UK Construction and Engineering Undergraduate of the Year category, it is something I wouldn’t have even dreamed of pursuing a couple of years ago. The highlight of the day was the fact that eight out of the ten of the finalists in the category were women which is twice as many as ever before and an inspiration to be a part of. My placement at Gleeds was also a great experience as I was able to put aspects of what I have learnt at university into practice and enjoyed working on projects across the country. I will be returning to Gleeds for my Placement Year upon invitation from one of the company’s directors.”
