International MA Commercial Photography student Sharon Rong Xue was one in over 1000 entries selected for the AOP Student Awards 2018, demonstrating her skills and creativity in the field.

Her selected image will be showcased at the Student Awards Exhibition at Wex Photo Video in Whitechapel, London from 6 June to 31 July 2018. The judges will choose the winners from each of the categories; people, places and things on 27 June 2018.

Sharon told us what inspired her: “I took this photo in the Xinjiang Province in northwest China. The little girl weeps silently in the arms of her father because she just lost her grandfather.

"I snapped this photo by chance and gave her a piece of candy and a hug. When I took this photo, I thought we all shared a common emotional experience with the little girl. Although we may speak different languages, the feeling of losing our loved ones is the same."

She continued: "I feel so lucky to have been selected as a finalist. This gives me a sense of certainty as I see the excellent work of my peers around me. This has helped me to analyse the positives and negatives of my photos."

NTU was recently ranked in the top 10 in the UK for art and design education (Complete University Guide 2019).
