Nottingham Trent University supports Hallam Internet with Enabling Innovation

The Nottingham Business School helps local SMEs to introduce innovative processes

Since July 2016, Nottingham Trent University’s Enabling Innovation programme has supported over 500 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Enabling Innovation with Hallam Internet

Hallam Internet received consultancy support to further understand and implement innovation within their business.

Founded in 1999, Hallam Internet is a Nottingham based digital marketing company with over 50 employees. The company delivers web design and development, search engine optimization, paid per click advertising as well as social media marketing. They also provide digital PR, content marketing and data analysis from Google Analytics.

Following rapid growth in 2017, Hallam Internet approached the Nottingham Business School looking at ways to manage its employees in a more standardised approach but in a way that will not stifle their creativity.

We are a fast growing company in a fast moving industry, and the Enabling Innovation experts helped us to uncover insights into our own team dynamics and ways of working. They gave us practical ways we could change our business that would give us real competitive advantage in terms of employee engagement and innovation.

Through the Enabling Innovation programme, NTU gave the company access to academic led expertise to introduce innovative, modern management processes, systems and techniques.

As a result, Hallam Internet has introduced positive changes to their organisation. Updates included restructuring two large teams into four smaller teams. A change that has led to more promotion opportunities and more managerial positions. Other changes included the introduction of flexi time, development of feedback techniques in the company to encourage further creativity and innovative thinking.

Enabling Innovation is a three-year collaboration between Nottingham Trent University, the University of Nottingham, and the University of Derby to support SMEs in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire to innovate. It is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)

Enabling Innovation will enables NTU to support businesses to invest in research and innovation; to make them more competitive, and help them to grow and create high-skill jobs with a range of schemes. We will achieve this in a number of ways, including:
- dedicated technical hubs in food and drink, materials engineering, computing and data, and design innovation
- innovation management workshops delivered by Nottingham Business School
- a contribution of 20% towards 60 graduate salaries for up to a year, to support businesses to introduce innovative products, services or processes
- academic and student-led projects and consultancy
- intensive specialist support for innovative businesses
- networking and business development workshops and events.
The project has received £10 Million of funding from the England European Regional Development Fund as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020. The Department for Communities and Local Government is the Managing Authority for European Regional Development Fund.
