Maths Degree Showcase 2019

Annual maths degree showcase 2019

On Wednesday 13th March in the ISTeC building, Clifton Campus, the Mathematics Team held its annual Mathematics Degree Showcase event.

This event provided an opportunity for final-year students to present posters describing their project work and network with visiting professionals, employers and NTU alumni. This year’s event was a huge success, with an exceptional level of engagement from visiting employers, including HMRC, Balfour Beatty, E.On and RSM, to name just a few.

The Showcase event also incorporated the Mathematics team’s annual Industry Liaison Forum – an opportunity for discussions between graduate recruiters and the NTU Mathematics Team, which drives continual course developments to ensure that students are provided with a robust and current skill-set that transfers directly to their future employment. These networking opportunities have led to greater employer input into Mathematics undergraduate modules to date, and have identified routes for more industry-based final-year projects in the future. Key messages from the industrial forum included the importance of communication skills, foundation coding skills and the need to embed theoretical techniques within real-world examples. Some suggested exercises relating to these topics were discussed and these will be included in the second year Problem Solving module and final year Professional Mathematics skills module as a result.

The winners of the prizes for the best student poster (in each of the two sessions), as voted for by our visiting employers and alumni were:

  • AM Session: Harry Milkins
  • PM Session: Conor McClean

These students each received a £25 Amazon voucher.
