Nottingham Business School graduate wins the TARGETjobs Future CFO Undergraduate of the Year Award 2020

BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance graduate Louis Sproul was announced as the winner this September

Louis Sprol

The Future CFO (Chief Financial Officer) award was sponsored by the ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), the global body for professional accountants. As the winner of this award, Louis will now be able to take part in a week long internship with an approved ACCA employer, kick starting his career in the accounting and finance industry.

Louis commented: “I am incredibly proud to have been given the chance to represent Nottingham Trent University (NTU) at these awards as over the past four years the university has provided innumerable opportunities for personal development and self-education. Taking part in the assessment centre and being surrounded by impressive undergraduates from universities such as Cambridge and Imperial College London left me with a feeling of impostor syndrome at first. Ultimately, winning the award shows that NTU students deserve to be on the main stage as some of the best performing students in the UK."

The competition involved a rigorous application process, consisting of online tests, an assessment centre hosted by the ACCA and a video submission. The ACCA and TARGETjobs were looking for a candidate who had the ambition to make a difference, with ethics and good morals, as well as creativity and communication skills.

During his time at Nottingham Trent University, Louis has taken advantage of many of the extra-curricular opportunities on offer, as well as completing a placement year. During his first year he took part in the University Business Challenge, and also went on a month-long Summer School at BI Oslo, in Norway. In his final year, he took on a role mentoring new Nottingham Business School (NBS) students as a CERT mentor and became President of EnactusNTU, leading a team of social entrepreneurs to deliver projects that help the community. He completed his studies in May 2020, graduating with a first-class honours degree.

Louis' enthusiasm in undertaking additional opportunities at NTU set him apart from his competitors. He told us: "I think due to the activities I’ve been able to undertake at NTU, I entered the competition with a wider skill set than some of the other participants. Having been exposed to a lot of real-world experiences, such as a placement and an international summer school, I felt like I really understood what the competition was looking for."

"At NTU I’ve learnt so much more than accounting practices and standards. I think NTU gives you the space, time and support to develop your understanding of who you are and what you’re really passionate about and that specifically is invaluable when preparing you for your future career."

Tom Spencer, Head of Undergraduate Programmes at Nottingham Business School, commented: “All of us at Nottingham Business School are incredibly proud of Louis and his recognition as Future CFO of the Year by TARGETjobs. Throughout his studies on the BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance course Louis has engaged with a wide range of opportunities made available to him by the course, School and wider University. His hard work, enthusiasm and commitment to make a difference, have quite deservedly seen him recognised in this way. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for him.”
