Sustainability inductions

Staff

The Sustainability team run monthly staff awareness courses for all colleagues, including new starters. The training allows staff to gain an understanding of:

  • sustainability at NTU
  • their responsibilities as staff members
  • ways they can get involved with sustainability projects and events.

To attend one of these sessions, email our Sustainability team.

There's also the ESD at NTU online workspace. It's hosted by the Green Academy, and is available to all NTU staff on SharePoint.

Students

Every year we invite our students to take part in a sustainability induction session as part of Welcome Week. We deliver the session online, with the aims  of:

  • provide an understanding of sustainability at NTU
  • introducing our Green Rewards programme
  • giving guidance on sustainable behaviours, and
  • highlighting events students can get involved with throughout the year.

Students can also undertake Sustainability in Practice (SiP). This short online module introduces sustainability fundamentals such as:

  • the climate and ecological emergency
  • the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and
  • systems thinking.

SiP is free for NTU students and staff. It's available automatically in the NOW learning room.

NTU Green Rewards

NTU Green Rewards

Staff and students are making a big impact through the NTU Green Rewards programme. They're sharing their green actions and taking part in more sustainable and wellbeing behaviours. Through a free and easy-to-use app, you can:

  • log your actions
  • take part in monthly challenges, and
  • earn points to win prizes.

Green Rewards for NTU is provided by Jump, who work alongside the NTU Sustainability team and the Students' Union to provide relevant and engaging activities that staff and students can undertake to behave more sustainably. If you have any suggestions or questions about the Green Rewards app, email our Sustainability team.

Funding for projects

Our Sustainability team provides funding for relevant, ambitious and effective student projects. When applying, student teams should be able to evidence the requirements, targets and predicted outcomes of their projects. These projects are welcome to focus on all areas of sustainability, including:

  • carbon reductions
  • biodiversity
  • waste
  • water, and
  • wellbeing.

If you believe you have a project we can help resource, email Sustainability to find out more.

Previous projects we've funded have included:

  • NTU Conservation Society building a hedgehog house and expanding wildflower areas at our Brackenhurst Campus
  • Handmade by Meredith — a zero-waste handmade clothing company created by NTU fashion student Meredith Adams.

Each year the NTU Sustainability team also fund a winning "Green Dragon" sustainability-focused project at the NTU Enterprise Awards.
