Sustainability Action Week 2022
Join us for a dedicated week of activities and events in partnership with NTSU, University of Nottingham, UoNSU and Nottingham City Council. Running from 28 Feb-6 March we’ll share advice and guidance for sustainable living and how to make positive change.
Under the Universities for Nottingham Network, Nottingham Trent University, in partnership with NTSU, University of Nottingham, UoNSU and Nottingham City Council are bringing together sustainability expertise from across Nottingham to run a week of events to raise awareness about environmental and social issues.
Both universities are leading the way in sustainability, ranked in the top five of the most sustainable universities in the world 2021 and will play an important role in supporting Nottingham’s commitment to become the first carbon-neutral city in the country by 2028.
We encourage staff and students to take part in this dedicated week of activities, where we’ll share advice and guidance for sustainable living. Highlights of the week include a Nottingham Climate Action Panel, a talk from Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust on volunteering opportunities and an interactive workshop on Eco-Anxiety.

Monday 28 Feb 2022 | Fairtrade and the Climate Crisis Workshop12-1pm Online The Climate Crisis workshop explores the impact of climate change upon farming practices for cocoa and coffee farmers. The sessions reviews how farmers are affected, the support that the Fairtrade foundation giving to mitigate the effects and will give insight into the tough choices that the farmers living in poverty have to face. Fairtrade Coffee and Chat3-4pm Brackenhurst Campus - Lyth Building Reception Meet members of the Sustainability Society whilst enjoying some free Fairtrade refreshments. Also present will be a member of the Sustainability Team, and a representative from Enva, the university's waste contractor. Any staff and students welcome, you can discuss all things sustainability with us or just come along to meet new people. Sustainability @ NTU workshop12pm-1pm Online This training allows attendees to gain an understanding of sustainability at NTU, understand their responsibilities as staff members and find out ways they can get involved with sustainability projects and events. Tuesday 1 March 2022 | NTSU Recyclable Clothes Fair11am-5pm City SU- The Level Join NTSU and avoid fast fashion by giving a new home to clothes donated by fellow students/colleagues. Also present will be members of the Global Lounge, Sustainability Society and Sustainability Team to discuss alternatives to fast fashion and ethical ways to invest in clothing. A small fee will applied to clothing items, money raised from the event will be donated through NTSU RAG to charities Trekstock and Women for Women International. People Powered Nature Recovery - Notts Wildlife Trust Talk3-4pm Live: City Campus - NEWLT1 Newton Building In this talk, open to NTU students and staff, Erin McDaid (Head of Communications and Marketing) and Emma Sherburn (Youth Trustee) at Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust discuss the charity’s response to the nature & climate crisis and commitment to mobilising people to take action locally. Erin and Emma will reflect on activities NTU and NWT have worked together on for wildlife and how communities can support create a wilder Nottinghamshire. The talk will take place live at City Campus in NEWLT1 - Please use this registration form if you are attending the live event. The talk will also be live streamed on this link There will also be viewing party at Brackenhurst Campus in room in BRAMhTG2 - Bramley Building. The session will be facilitated and questions will be sent over live to the speaker. No registration required to attend the stream. Fashion, drinks, and music, what more could you want? This event will be an exclusive shopping experience where we will have an after hours shopping experience at Sue Ryder. You can bring your own drink (alcoholic or regular) and take advantage of an exclusive 25% off discount on everything (except handmade garments). Wednesday 2 March 2022 | Nottingham Climate Action Panel *POSTPONED UNTIL 24TH MARCH*5:30-6:30pm Online With Nottingham City Council's well publicised, ambitious plan for Nottingham to become the first city in the UK to achieve net zero carbon by 2028, the panel will discuss the progress of their own institutional targets towards Net Zero/Carbon neutrality with a focus on Scope 3 emissions. The panel will also discuss their community engagement initiatives and explore ways to mobilise activism and climate positive behaviours within the community. Green Rewards, the online platform adopted by all three institutions, will be used as an example to evaluate community contributions. The Universities for Nottingham network consists of representatives from Nottingham Trent University, The University of Nottingham, and Nottingham City Council. Representatives from each will be present on the panel. Please complete the registration form to reserve your place. Clifton Allotment - Spring Sowing1-3pm Clifton Campus - Foodshare Allotment (Behind Peverell Reception) Join us at our Foodshare allotment to enjoy some mindful time outside learning new skills. With spring blooming, help us to create wildflower seed bombs and sow herbs and spring produce. No registration is required, just turn up on the day and we'll provide the equipment. No experience necessary. Sustainability in Laboratory Practice Workshop2:30-3pm Online An online workshop hosted by Biosciences academic Sheri Scott, to highlight the need for sustainability in laboratory practice. Learning objectives include: gaining knowledge and skills which can be applied to research projects, professional development, employability and career advancement. Thursday 3 March 2022 | The Great NTU Book Swap12-2pm Brackenhurst, City, and Clifton Join us at City, Clifton and Brackenhurst Campuses for a "The Great NTU Book Swap" World Book Day Book Exchange as part of the NTU Sustainability Action Week. Come along with any books you wish to donate and/or pick up something new that you might like to try. We'll be in at the following places between 12-2pm so just pop along to drop off or pick up a book:
We also have donation points at Mary-Ann Evans (Clifton), Maudslay Reception (City Campus) and Brackenhurst Library (Brackenhurst Campus) if you would like to drop off any books to exchange before the event. Managing Eco- Anxiety Workshop12-1pm Online Eco-anxiety is the term used to describe a sense of fear or worry about climate change. Learn more about eco-anxiety and how to tackle it including tips on reducing stress and anxiousness, suggestions for practical actions, insights from research insight, ideas for creative expression plus a demonstration of embodied, nature-based wellbeing techniques using Tai Chi Qigong movements. The Fairtrade Coffee Game2:30-4pm City Campus - NTU Global Lounge Many of us enjoy a cup of coffee, but do you know the various trades which take place on your coffee's journey from bean to cup? Join the NTU Green Academy and NTU Global Lounge to play a game where you will flex your negotiation skills and learn about the global coffee supply chain. The game will be followed by a discussion on Fairtrade. All students and staff welcome. This event is being run as part of Fairtrade Fortnight and the NTU Sustainability Action Week.

Friday 4 March 2022 | Students as Changemakers Workshop12-1pm Online During Global Goals Teach-In Week we take a deep dive into the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (also known as the 'Global Goals') and explore how these can be used within curriculum for students to understand and take action on some of the most complex challenges of our time such as ending poverty, creating peaceful institutions, planning sustainable cities, and halting or reversing climate change. Workshop hosted by the NTU Trent Institute for Learning and Teaching (TILT). Facilitators will be Helen Puntha, Leader of the NTU Green Academy and Megan De Ste Croix, Educational Developer in the NTU Centre for Academic Development and Quality (CADQ) This session is part of the NTU Sustainability Action Week and Global Goals Teach-In Campaign.
Interactive Recycling Game12-2pm City Campus- Newton Building, Level 1 (opposite Coffee Spot) Find our stall and test your knowledge with Enva, NTU's waste contractor, on what surprising materials can and can't be recycled. Prizes and sustainable freebies on offer for those who play along. TILTSpotlight - How to Integrate Education for Sustainable Development into your Teaching1:30-2:20pm Online In this workshop, Alex Meredith (Psychology) will talk about approaches to teaching about sustainable behaviours, and introduce a toolkit that staff can use to help facilitate their teaching. The workshop will also explore interdisciplinary conceptualisations of sustainable behaviours, and introduce a new initiative to develop a University wide network to facilitate such understandings. Throughout | Cycling is SustainableDownload the Moves+ app to take part in our NTU Sustainability Action Week Challenge! We have a challenge for you to encourage cycling to wherever you need to get to this week! Either cycle to work or your campus the next 5 days, or an average of 3 miles per day. By logging your progress in the Moves app, you will be automatically entered in to our prize draw to win a Chilly's Water Bottle and NTU reusable Coffee Cup!
