Sustainability Action Week 2023

Sustainability Action Week will take place from 13 to 19 February 2023. NTU is bringing together sustainability expertise from across the university and Nottingham to run a week of events to raise awareness about environmental and social issues.

Running alongside Student Volunteering Week and NTSU's Give it a Go Week we'll be encouraging staff and students to take part in this dedicated week of activities, which are focused on giving back to the environment and community. Highlights of the week include a Green Forum, Tree Planting and Sustainability Stalls.

Sustainability stall

12 noon to 3 pm — City Campus — Newton

Find the Sustainability team in the Newton building for a chat and play along to our sustainability-based games. We'll be able to discuss sustainability initiatives at NTU and hear your feedback. We'll even have some sustainable freebies with us.

Hedgehog Friendly Campus talk

12 to 1 pm — Online — Register to join the session

Join the Sustainability team as we detail the work undertaken at NTU to achieve our Hedgehog Friendly Campus accreditation. You'll find out about biodiversity initiatives across our sites and how you can get involved with surveys and workshops.

Operation Wallacea Talk

12 noon — 1 pm — Brackenhurst — BRMTL11 — Register to join this session.

Operation Wallacea has been running award winning biodiversity research expeditions for the last 25 years, helping volunteers around the world gain valuable experience and get their hands dirty with real biodiversity research. Students and staff are welcome along to this talk to find out how you can undertake research with the organisation.

Dr Bike stall

11 am to 2 pm — City — NTSU Square

NTU's bike mechanic will be able to give your bike a thorough check and make minor repairs, such as changing brake blocks and tightening brakes, for free. The stall will also provide information on the NTU cycle hub, how to plan routes effectively, and other cycling opportunities at NTU.

TILTSpotlight: 'Education For Sustainable Development in the Healthcare Science Practitioner Apprenticeship curriculum'

3 pm to 4 pm — Online — Book on Thrive to participate.

Join Sheri Scott from the School of Science and Technology to shine a spotlight on a pedagogical approach for sustainable development. With sustainability becoming a key consideration for course development, employing educational principles such as Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is paramount.

NTU green forum

9 am to 3 pm — City — Arkwright — Old Chemistry Theatre — Register to participate.

A chance for NTU students to give their insight on how the NTU community can work together to improve nature and promote climate action within Nottingham and beyond! Students will learn about the ongoing work and ambitions in sustainability across NTU, NTSU, the local council and in a global context, reflecting on COP27. Interactive workshops will run in the morning with practical activities in the afternoon. Free lunch for attendees.

Foodshare allotment

1 pm to 3 pm — Clifton — Allotment (behind Peverell Reception).

Join us at our Foodshare allotment to enjoy some mindful time outside learning new skills. Our Allotment Coordinator will guide a session of gardening for staff and students. No registration is required — just turn up on the day and we'll provide the equipment. No experience necessary.

Green jobs — your career, our future

12 noon to 1 pm — Online — Register to take part.

Join Vicky Harvey from the Employability team to explore:

  • what "green jobs" means
  • what to consider when looking for work opportunities, both now and in the future
  • how you can make a job greener.

Tree planting

1 pm to 4 pm — Mansfield Woodhouse — Peafield Park — Register to take part.

The Sherwood Forest Trust is hosting this session of tree planting for students at Peafield Park in Mansfield. We'll be helping to plant up to 400 trees, including 140 fruit trees as part of an orchard. Spaces are limited to just 20, so please sign up and do let us know if you can no longer attend, so we can free up the space for others.

We can provide transport for up to 8 attendees. The site is also accessible by car and public transport.

Puncture and pizza workshop

6 pm to 8.30 pm — City — Unit 7 and 8 Chaucer Street, Nottingham, NG1 5LP — Register to take part.

Women in Tandem is a women-led, Nottingham-based community interest company to support you with all your bike needs. We are offering free pizza and an opportunity to learn the basic skills to repair your bike.

This workshop will cover:

  • bike safety checks
  • puncture repair
  • tyre assessment
  • setting up your bike for maximum comfort and efficiency.

We recommend participants bring their own bike so they can best learn to fix it. There will be a couple of demo bikes if required.

Sustainability stall

12 noon to 3 pm — Clifton — Pavilion

Find the Sustainability team in the Pavilion for a chat, and play along with our sustainability-based games. We'll be able to discuss sustainability initiatives at NTU and hear your feedback. We'll even have some sustainable freebies with us.

Nature walk and litter pick

12 noon to 1 pm — Clifton Nature Trail — Meet at the allotment — Register to take part.

Join the Sustainability team for a guided walk around the Clifton Nature Trail, learning how we look after biodiversity at the campus. We'll also be taking litter picks around with us and recording what we collect as part of our Hedgehog Friendly Campus accreditation.

Green rewards

Sign up to Green Rewards and find a range of sustainable activities across six key themes and start earning points for your positive actions.

Educate yourself on sustainability

Complete the free online Sustainability in Practice module from NTU Green Academy. It's designed to enhance your employability and sustainability literacy in the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Choose a theme of clothing, energy or food and find out how sustainability links to your own discipline. You can use SiP to gain your Bronze Sustainability Employability Award.

Fairtrade Fortnight

Fairtrade Fortnight will run 27 February to 10 March. Check out ongoing events across the university and take our Fairtrade at NTU Survey.

Climate Literacy and Action for All

This free six-hour online FutureLearn short course was created by NBS. Explore the best high-impact climate solutions available and embed them in your private and professional lives.
