Making the most of the Student Dashboard
The Dashboard is an award-winning learning analytics resource for students and staff at Nottingham Trent University. Every NTU student has access to their own Dashboard information. As a member of staff, you too will have access to your students’ Dashboards.
At Nottingham Trent University we have an award-winning learning analytics system: the NTU Student Dashboard. This is available to both staff and students. It has been designed to help students manage their learning and enable members of staff to provide more personalised support.
What is the Student Dashboard?
The Student Dashboard is an online resource to help us understand how students are engaging with their studies. It is a simple tool that takes data from a range of different internal data sources to provide a daily engagement rating.
The Dashboard is designed to help tutors and other support services to have personalised conversations with their students.
As part of our commitment to supporting students, we will monitor engagement so that we can contact them to offer guidance or support.
Why should I use it?
We have found a strong association between the engagement rating in the Dashboard and both the likelihood of students completing the year and achieving a good grade.
The Dashboard reflects a student’s engagement with the University and provides clear data for you to use with your students in your one-to-one conversations.
How is engagement calculated?
The NTU Student Dashboard measures student engagement in various ways including:
- Logging into NOW
- Logging into NOW Learning Rooms
- Submitting coursework through the NOW Dropbox
- E-book usage
- Card swipes into buildings
- Library loans
The Dashboard takes this data and calculates students’ engagement ratings every day. There are five different ratings:
- High (H)
- Good (G)
- Partial (P)
- Low (L)
- Very Low (V)
The engagement ratings are designed to offer students some feedback about their patterns of engagement over time, compared with their peers.
How do I use it?
When you log into NOW click onto the Student Dashboard option at the top of the page. This will automatically launch the Dashboard.
