NTU Progression - Year 12

NTU Progression is a free programme of opportunities designed to help students in Years 12-13 access and succeed at university. The scheme is making a real difference in improving outcomes for young people and was recently shortlisted by The Guardian University Awards for helping to support young people from under-represented groups progress to university (any university they choose, not just NTU). Students can apply for this scheme in Year 12.

This programme is ideal for those students who are unsure what university is actually like, whether it is an option for them or are unsure how to prepare a strong university application. NTU Progression will help find answers to all these questions and equip them with the confidence and skills they need to be a successful university student.

NTU Progression members will gain:

  • a taste of what it is like to study at university
  • an understanding of the university application process
  • work experience that will look excellent on their CV/ UCAS application
  • one-to-one mentoring from a current NTU student, so they can get their questions about university answered
  • support to help them improve their grades at school
  • a chance to meet new friends on the scheme.

Year 12

NTU Progression has been designed to help students in Year 12 and 13 (or 1 and 2 in college) achieve their ambitions. It doesn't matter if students have little or no experience of higher education, we can provide them with the confidence, skills and knowledge throughout sixth form or college to help secure a university place

What does it actually involve?

Students will be invited to participate in lots of different sessions. Below is an example of some of the opportunities we have on offer:

Welcome Evening

To start, they’ll be invited along to an NTU Progression Welcome Evening to find what will be happening over the next two years, meet other members on the scheme and receive their membership card.

Student Shadowing

Progression members will spend a day with a current NTU student and experience university life first hand. They'll attend a real lecture and a seminar to decide if the subject is really for them, and we'll even pay for their lunch.

Summer Residential

Students will be given the option to live and learn like a University student at our Summer Residential. During this time students will complete a project, attend a range of social events and make friends for when they actually start at university. It's the best possible way to experience university and decide whether it is the right option for them.

Exclusive access to NTU

We want our NTU Progression members to feel part of NTU; our membership card will grant them free access in to our modern gym (over 18s only) and our excellent library facilities for a quiet space to study.

Social events

Education is not just about books, but also experiences. We do all we can to offer extra-curricular opportunities such as trips to the theatre, horse riding and basketball games! University is not just about work, and neither is NTU Progression – there will be plenty of opportunities for young people to meet other members at events held at the University and around Nottingham.

University application support

Students will receive individual support with their UCAS personal statement to help make it the best they can ready to submit for university consideration

Beyond progression

Our support does not stop there. If students choose to study at NTU at end of school or college, they’ll be offered support during their transition into first year as an undergraduate NTU student.
