FAQs about short courses

Find answers to the frequently asked questions about our short courses.

Anyone can enrol so long as they are aged 18 or over and have read the course description and booking terms and conditions.

Our courses are open to adults of all ages and experience.

Most of our classes are practical, which means we have to limit their size. To avoid disappointment, we suggest you book your place early. We take bookings up until the day the course starts as long as there are places available.

The price of each course is advertised online. The fee is the same for everyone who attends regardless of age, nationality or employment status. All fees include VAT.

We don't offer help with fees for our short courses. However, we do offer a 10% discount for returning customers, NTU staff, NTU students, and NTU alumni. If you believe you qualify for the 10% discount, please get in touch to receive confirmation that you are eligible before making any payments.

The tutor will present you with a certificate of attendance if you attend 80% or more of a course, and have completed any projects (if applicable) to a satisfactory level.

All courses are online with live registers. Once the limit is reached, the status on the website will change to 'fully booked' and this will initiate a waiting list.

It depends on the course, but the class sizes for our practical courses are usually no more than 15 people. Maximum numbers will be detailed on our individual online store course page for your reference before booking, so please check the course page for confirmation.

The courses take place in the same teaching spaces that our full-time students use, with most using our City Campus facilities in Nottingham city centre.

Animal and food production courses will be taught at our Brackenhurst campus, near Southwell. This is approximately 14 miles from Nottingham's city centre.

If we need you to bring anything, it will be detailed on the course page in the online store. When you book your place, we'll also send you a confirmation email with details of what you might need to bring with you on your first day, and what you might need as the course progresses.

We are committed to making reasonable adjustments wherever practical to our short courses. If you have any questions or wish to check access or support, please contact us. We will liaise with Student Support Services who are in contact with outside agencies and who might be able to support with any additional requirements.

You only have access to the teaching spaces during your designated class time.

1. Fees

Your place will not be guaranteed until the full fee has been received. All fees are inclusive of VAT. The fee covers the tuition and access to equipment and, where appropriate, some course materials. You will be issued with a materials list for the course which you will be responsible to provide. Details on this list will be advertised on the website with your course.

2. Payment methods

Payment of Short Course fees can be made online. You can also pay by post or bank transfer. Cheques must be made payable to Nottingham Consultants Ltd. Payment by bank transfer will require an additional £30 to cover the transaction fee charged by the bank. Your application form must include the bank transfer transaction number (otherwise your enrolment may be delayed while the payment is matched to your name). Bank details are available on request.

Invoices:

If you wish an organisation to be invoiced for your fees you must send the application form with an official purchase order.

3. Booking deadline

We take bookings until a course is full or until the day the course starts, whichever occurs first. If you are booking close to the course start date you are advised to contact us to ensure your payment has been received and that you are on the register.

4. Age

Customers for short courses must be 18 or above on the first day, unless otherwise stated in the course description.

5. International customers

The fees are the same for home and overseas customers. If you are travelling to the UK especially for your course you must include a local address and telephone number in case we need to contact you near to the start date. You are recommended to check the status of your booking and course availability before you book your travel.

English language:

All classes are delivered in English. As a guide you should have an IELTS score of 4.5 or above for practical courses and 6.0 for lecture-based courses.

UK Border Agency:

If you do not hold a UK, EU or EEA passport you must check with the UK Border Agency regarding visas before you make your booking.

Visa applications can take time. If you do not leave sufficient time to obtain a visa once you have booked your course and your visa is declined or delayed you will not by right be eligible for a refund. However, a transfer of the fees to a similar course at a different date will be possible.

6. Customer cancellations

A 14 day cooling off period applies to short course bookings, should you change your mind before a course begins. Should you cancel within 14 days of booking no cancellation charges will apply. If you wish to cancel your place you must put your request in writing. Refunds of fees usually take ten working days. The following penalties apply:

More than 30 days' notice = refund minus £30 administration charge.

Less than 30 days' notice = refund minus £30 administration charge ONLY if a new customer takes your place on the course, otherwise no refund will be given. This applies to any customer who books less than 30 days before the start date.

If you cannot attend a course and you provide a substitute to take your place then no charge will be due.

7. Customer transfers and substitutions

If you wish to transfer from one course to another you must put your request in writing. The following penalties apply:

More than 30 days' notice = transfer full fee upon payment of an additional £30 administration charge.

Less than 30 days' notice = transfer full fee upon payment of an additional £30 administration charge ONLY if a new customer takes your place on the course, otherwise no transfer will be given. This applies to any customer who books less than 30 days before the start date.

You may transfer between courses up to a maximum of two times. No transfer request can be accepted once the course has begun. If you cannot attend a course and you provide a substitute to take your place then no charge will be due.

8. Course cancellation, changes and class postponement

Every advertised short course requires a minimum number of bookings for it to cover its costs and run. If a course does not achieve a minimum number of bookings we will aim to give you at least 14 days' notice and you will have the option of a full refund or a transfer to another course. We reserve the right to make changes to courses such as moving location (within reason) or changing tutors. If a session has to be cancelled for whatever reason, such as staff illness, then it will be rescheduled. If no reasonable day or time can be identified then a refund will be issued for that session.

Nottingham Trent University's total liability to the short course customer in respect of any losses arising from or in connection with the short course programme shall in no circumstances exceed the price paid for the course.

9. Missed classes

If you miss one or more classes due to illness or professional or personal commitments you are not by right able to receive a refund, a transfer or additional time with the tutor. However, all circumstances will be considered and the necessary fair action will be taken.

10. Certificate of Attendance

If you attend 80% or more of the course then a Certificate of Attendance will be issued to you, normally on the last day of the course.

11. Health and safety

You will be expected to follow the health and safety instructions of your tutor at all times. Failure to follow health and safety instructions may mean that you cannot participate in certain activities.

Classroom conduct:

All customers must conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. If a customer is repeatedly disruptive and complaints are received from the tutor or other customers then a warning will be issued which may result in removal from the course.

12. Force Majeure

The University is not liable for failure to deliver the short course if such failure is as a result of Acts of God (including fire, flood, earthquake, storm, hurricane or other natural disaster), war, invasion, act of foreign enemies, hostilities (regardless of whether war is declared), civil war, rebellion, revolution, insurrection, military or usurped power or confiscation, terrorist activities, nationalisation, government sanction, blockage, embargo, labour dispute, strike, lockout or interruption or failure of electricity or telephone service.
