Bursaries

The NTU Music team are pleased to offer bursaries that support students' development in music and public speaking. If you're in a receipt of an NTU Bursary and thinking of trying something new during your time at university, take a look below to see what you could get involved in.

Making Music Bursary – learn to sing or play an instrument

This bursary provides you with discounted vocal or instrumental tuition from one of our experienced teachers. You don't need to have previous experience – just a passion for making music! We subsidise the total cost, and you contribute a portion using money from your NTU Opportunity Bursary.

You'll receive 22 discounted lessons of 30 minutes during term time, for the 2023/24 academic year. We'll also provide you with an instrument (where applicable, subject to availability). You'll contribute £165 from your NTU Opportunity Bursary via the NTU Online Store by Friday 2 February 2024. All lessons are taught at the NTU Music Centre on City Campus.

Choose from the following instruments (subject to availability):

  • voice
  • piano
  • drum kit
  • percussion including Mallets (marimba, xylophone, glockenspiel, vibraphone) and timpani
  • guitar including acoustic, electric and bass
  • brass including cornet, tenor horn, french horn, euphonium, trombone, tuba
  • woodwind including flute, piccolo, clarinet, soprano saxophone and tenor saxophone
  • strings including violin, cello and double bass

If you own an instrument that isn’t listed above, we may still be able to offer you tuition. Email music@ntu.ac.uk to find out more.

You can apply for this bursary if:

  • You are currently in receipt of an NTU Bursary
  • You are not eligible to apply for our NTU Music Scholarship
  • You are not applying for our Public Speaking Bursary

Complete our online Making Music Bursary application form.

The deadline to apply is 11.59 pm on Sunday 8 October 2023.

All candidates who apply before the deadline will be assessed on the strength of their application, and for the Making Music Bursary on your choice of instrument, experience and statement. Successful students will be contacted as quickly as possible after the deadline.

Public Speaking Bursary – learn to express yourself confidently

This bursary provides you with discounted public speaking lessons from one of our professional coaches. You’ll learn how to express yourself confidently through spoken communication and develop future-proof skills that will benefit you in all areas of life – from social situations to interviews and future employment. We subsidise the total cost, and you contribute a portion using money from your NTU Opportunity Bursary.

You'll receive 11 discounted public speaking lessons of 1 hour every other week during term time, for the 2023/24 academic year. You'll contribute £165 from your NTU Opportunity Bursary via the NTU Online Store by Friday 2 February 2024. The majority of sessions are delivered online, with a small number of in-person sessions at the NTU Music Centre on City Campus.

You’ll also have the opportunity to gain a qualification in public speaking by working towards LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) graded exams in communication.

You can apply for this bursary if:

  • You are currently in receipt of an NTU Bursary
  • You are not applying for our Making Music Bursary
