Guide to Clearing

Clearing allows you to apply for university courses after you have received your results. You are eligible for Clearing if:

  • you’ve not met the conditions of your firm and insurance choices
  • you’ve changed your mind about where or what you want to study
  • it’s the first time you’ve thought about applying for university.

Clearing is simple to use, and it all starts with a call to your chosen university or college. This guide will answer your questions about the Clearing process, explain how you’ll know if you are eligible, and help you choose the right university for you.

What happens when I get my A-level results?

For most students, UCAS will send your A-level results to the Universities you have decided are your firm and insurance choices. These Universities will check your results against the offers they gave you to see if you have met the conditions of your offer

The first thing you should do when you have received your results, is login to UCAS Track to see if you have been successful at your firm/insurance choices. If you have achieved the grades they have asked for, they will have accepted you on the course and made your offer unconditional. You’re in!

If you didn’t quite get the grades you hoped for, above all don’t panic. The University may still accept you, or make you an offer for an alternative course, such as a foundation degree. Check your offer on UCAS Track carefully before you decide if you want to accept it.

If you have been unsuccessful with your firm choice, then you may be accepted by your Insurance offer who will make your offer unconditional.

If you missed the grades to be accepted by your insurance offer and are rejected by both and you want to consider other options, or you have not applied before, then it’s time to think about Clearing.

Here are some things you can do to prepare for Clearing:

  • Research and make a list of the universities that you may want to apply for in Clearing. Most universities will have dedicated phone numbers for Clearing applicants, so make a note of these when you are doing your research.
  • Talk to our staff and students using our online chat.

What happens if I’m not studying A-levels?

UCAS sends the results for hundreds of different qualifications to universities and colleges automatically, so as soon as you receive your results, check UCAS Track to see if a decision has been made on your application. You can check UCAS for details of which qualifications don’t always get sent automatically.

If your chosen universities have not made a decision, it may be because they haven’t received your all of your results, or they don’t match what you have put in your application. When you have got your results, contact your chosen universities to see if there is anything that they are still waiting for to help them make a decision. They may ask you to send in proof of your results.

What happens if I have an Unconditional offer already?

If you have accepted an unconditional offer as your firm choice, then congratulations you have been accepted and your place at university has been confirmed. Time to start making plans for starting your course.

If you have changed your mind about an unconditional place, you can still apply to other institutions in Clearing. It is very important that you don’t decline your place before you have another offer from somewhere else. You won’t automatically go to your insurance choice and could end up with no place at university at all, so make sure you check UCAS carefully and contact the University you are interested in before you make a decision.

What happens if I'm a new applicant?

Before 6 pm on Tuesday 30 June you can still apply on UCAS as normal. If you have already used up your five choices, you will need to use UCAS Extra. Applications received after Tuesday 30 June 2020 and before Sunday 20 September 2020 automatically enter Clearing. Contact us if you’re not sure what you need to do to apply.

When you’re ready, here are just a few simple steps that you need to follow:

  • Do your research on university and the UCAS websites, to check to see if the University is accepting applications and has any vacancies.
  • If you haven’t already done so, complete your application on the UCAS website.
  • UCAS will send you a welcome letter and login details for UCAS Track. Call our Admissions and Enquiry team to discuss your options on +44 (0)115 848 6000.
  • If we give you an offer, you can refer yourself to us through UCAS Track.

If you have a change of heart, Adjustment allows you to reconsider where and what you have applied to study without losing your confirmed place.

To be eligible to use Adjustment, you will need to have met and exceeded the conditions of your offer. If you think this applies to you, and you want to look at what options are available via Adjustment, you will need to register for Adjustment in your UCAS Track.

If you choose to register for Adjustment, remember the following:

  • You have five days from results day – or whenever your first (firm) offer becomes unconditional – to take advantage of Adjustment once you have clicked this button.
  • Your firm offer is secure while you look at other options and will remain so unless you accept a new choice.
  • All our courses that are available in Clearing will also be open for Adjustment. Search our list of courses available through Clearing and contact our Clearing team to discuss your options.
  • If we make you an offer and you verbally accept it, our Admissions team will add NTU to your UCAS application and then send you joining instructions by email.
  • You can then contact our Accommodation and Student Finance teams.
