Introduction:

If you're 15 - 17 years old, join our qualified Animal Technicians at the Brackenhurst Campus Animal Unit for the day. This course will allow you to work alongside the technicians and is perfect for those who have an interest in rabbits, guinea pigs and rodents. You'll learn all about these fascinating species and develop your animal handling skills.

  • Learn what it's like to work with small mammal species.
  • Spend the day in our Animal Unit - home to over 250 animals from more than 70 different species.

What you’ll study


Examples of activities you may get to experience:

  • Feeding
  • Grooming and nail trimming
  • Enclosure cleaning
  • Enrichment making
  • Animal handling and basic health checks.

There will also be plenty of opportunities throughout the day to chat to our technical team and learn about what it's like to work with animals and small mammal species.

Campus and facilities

You will be based at our Brackenhurst Campus in Southwell.

The Animal Unit houses a wide range of animal species and will provide real-life, hands-on opportunities to experience what working with animals on a daily basis might be like.

What you need to bring with you on the day

Please bring your own packed lunch and drinks. There are free water machines located nearby where you can refill your own drinks bottle.

What you should wear

Sturdy footwear such as wellingtons or boots (i.e. no trainers or open toe shoes).

Beginner, no previous experience is needed.

  • You need to be aged between 15 and 17 years old
  • Have an interest in small mammal species
  • Have parental / legal guardian consent to attend. A consent form will be emailed after booking to complete and return prior to your arrival. If this is not returned you will not be allowed into the unit.
