Introduction:

On this one-day course you’ll learn about sustainability in the context of the construction industry, its environmental impact and the opportunities for building a sustainable future.

It’s useful for anyone in the construction sector who’s interested in construction policies, regulations and assessment strategies and the impact they are having on construction technology, the efficient use of resources and the promotion of health and wellbeing.

By the end of the day, you will have gained:

  • an awareness of sustainability policies, assessment strategies and related technologies
  • an understanding of the mechanisms of building energy, water and materials consumption
  • an appreciation of the roles and skills related to sustainability in today’s construction industry.

What you’ll study

On the course, you will:

  • gain an overview of sustainable development and energy management
  • hear how climate change affects buildings and people
  • learn about the policies and assessment methods including UK Climate Change Act and New Zero
  • understand what is meant by the ‘circular economy’.

You’ll also hear about systemic strategies for reducing the environmental impact of buildings by looking at:

  • behaviour, performance gaps and sustainable consumption
  • procurement
  • green building inspections, commissioning, operations and retrofit
  • Nature Based Solutions for the built environment.

This course is delivered via lectures and group discussions.
