Introduction:
On this course, you’ll learn about various retrofit technologies and the practical and theoretical issues relating to sustainability, zero-net and building regulations.
It’s useful for anyone in the construction sector who’s looking to develop skills as a retrofit coordinator and increase their level of project engagement and productivity.
This course will help you understand the mechanisms of building efficiency in existing dwellings and learn how to select appropriate retrofit measures.
You’ll be introduced to a variety of different modelling, including the Standard Assessment Procedures (SAP) for domestic and non-domestic settings.
By the end of the course, you will:
- be able to make logical recommendations based on the information available
- be confident in solving problems
- be comfortable in generating new ideas, innovations and solutions
- communicate information, ideas and concepts effectively using the appropriate software
- have improved your interpersonal skills and ability to work constructively in a team
- be able to demonstrate a range of transferable skills that be will valuable in the workplace.

What you’ll study
Your studies will ensure you meet the requirements of the Retrofit Assessor role in the context of sustainability, zero-net and building regulations. Your sessions will cover elements including:
- An overview of PAS2035 and other related roles
- TrustMark and data warehousing
- An overview of SAP and PHPP
- RdSAP
- Energy efficiency advice, including government-approved and endorsed services
- The benefits of whole house retrofit
- Risk assessment paths A, B, and C – and their impact on Assessors
- Understanding heritage buildings
- Planning and site constraints
- Identify existing energy efficiency measure(s)
- The occupancy assessment process
- Widen your understanding of
- Building structure
- U-values and Linear Thermal Bridging
- Solar and heat gains
- Structural defects
- Condition reporting
- Estimating energy use and cost
- Moisture, mold damp, ventilation, condensation and trickle vents.
How you’re taught
Teaching and learning will take place using a flexible programme of lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials.
How you’re assessed
Assessment methods include coursework and presentations.
You'll also complete a range of assessments to show your competence as a Retrofit Assessor, this includes a Test Case and a multiple-choice exam.
Campus and facilities
Entry requirements
To apply for this course you must:
- be over the age of 19;
- live in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, or Lincolnshire.
- hold the Level 3 Domestic Energy Assessor qualification.
For most Skills Bootcamps, no previous knowledge of the subject is needed – you just need a good grasp of the English language and the willingness to learn new skills.
