This course provides the perfect blend of learning. We’ll build your business and finance knowledge through real-world scenarios focusing on accountancy, financial modelling and economics, while underpinning this with a sound mathematics base in statistics, algebra and calculus.

It’s not only about learning the theory – it’s about the application too – and lots of it. There are plenty of opportunities for you to get hands-on in our cutting-edge facilities to try out your ideas.

Your final-year modules reflect the expertise and research of our staff, making sure you are learning the most current and relevant information. This course is also accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, which is a seal of approval from the professional body and will help you on your way to Chartered Mathematician status.

Research scholarships

Every year we offer a number of Mathematics Undergraduate Research Scholarships (MURS), giving successful applicants funding for a six-to-eight-week placement in one of our research teams. What you’ll study

The financial services industry makes a significant contribution to the UK economy, and effective financial management is vital to the success of any business. That’s why skilled financial mathematicians are in such high demand.This course gives you a broad knowledge of financial mathematics in accountancy practice, the operations of financial markets, and the wider business environment, so that when you graduate you’ll have a solid but flexible knowledge base that will put you in a fantastic position to get the job that you want.

In Years One and Two you’ll explore a wide range of mathematical techniques and applications. Then, in your final year, you’ll get to choose a number of specialist modules depending on your own personal preferences and career aspirations.

Learn a new language

Introduction to Abstract Algebra

You will be introduced to the world of rigorous mathematics, as well as the theory to help you learn about the most important algebraic structures, groups and vector spaces.

Introduction to Numerical Methods

Learn about important numerical methods for solving mathematical problems and develop computational skills using specialist mathematical software packages.

Introduction to Economics and Finance

Acquire knowledge of national and international economic systems and develop the analytical, numerical and IT skills used in the study of business data. Particular attention is given to the financial sector and markets.

Mathematical Methods

This module aims to consolidate and extend your previous knowledge of calculus and linear algebra, with emphasis on the underlying intuition of the techniques.

Data Analysis

Providing you with an introduction to important statistical ideas and their application in modern software. You will explore data analysis, probability, statistical inference and statistical modelling.

Accounting and Finance for Managers

Provides non-accounting managers with the skills and competencies to make effective use of accounting information, especially for control and decision-making purposes.

Introduction to Financial Mathematics

Discover how financial markets operate, with emphasis on mathematical models of stock and bond process and option pricing in the discrete time context. Learn basic financial mathematics concepts such as viability, completeness, the arbitrage principle, self-financing and replication.

Mathematical Modelling and Quality Control for Business

Use mathematical techniques to solve business and financial problems and learn about quality assessment methods in business. You will be introduced to quantitative techniques and how to implement them using a computer package.

Numerical Methods for Ordinary Differential Equations

You will further develop your computational and professional skills and enhance your knowledge of specialist numerical software packages.

Differential Equations and Transform Methods

Extend your knowledge of calculus, differential equations and linear algebra and gain an introduction to difference equations, the eigen problem and transform methods.

Problem Solving

Learn how to select and apply appropriate techniques, and use specialist mathematical and statistical software to help solve open ended applied problems. Extend your commercial awareness by tackling industrial problems in a professional manner.

Probability and Statistical Inference

Refine your knowledge of statistical inference and statistical modelling and further develop essential computational and IT skills.

Optional year-long work placement.  If you are not taking a placement, you will progress directly to your final year in year three.

Project in Mathematics

The final year project gives you the opportunity to demonstrate and document your skills, knowledge and understanding of mathematics, and show your planning, organisation and problem solving abilities.

Financial and Insurance Mathematics

Extend your knowledge of stock pricing modelling and option pricing in the continuous time context. Develop a mathematical understanding of insurance, including standard mathematical models of risk and credibility, and the Black-Scholes formula.

Business Analysis

Develop your understanding of the factors within the design and operation of business systems and processes supplying goods or services. Explore aspects of customer requirements and processes, dashboard design and continuous improvement.

Linear Systems

You will continue your previous studies in the fields of linear algebra and differential and difference equations.

Statistical Modelling

This module will help you to recognise and understand the principal methods of analysis for medical and financial data, including the analysis of survival data and dealing with large, complex datasets.

Optimisation

Optimisation is the art of optimal decision-making under constraints. This module introduces you to optimisation, focussing on the theoretical foundations of the subject, as well as the practical modelling aspects, and the algorithm analysis and design.

Extend your experience of statistical techniques and methodologies, applying them in a diverse range of industrial and commercial contexts.

Numerical Analysis and Dynamical Systems

Develop your knowledge of numerical methods with an emphasis on numerical optimisation techniques, advanced methods for the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations and the application of methods to non-linear problems.

Stochastic Processes

Extend your understanding of probabilistic modelling to include stochastic processes and learn advanced techniques for investing the behaviour of stochastic processes.

Professional Mathematics Skills

Gain a broad view of the practical applications of Mathematics in the real world, especially in industrial contexts such as Finance, Physics and Engineering.

Graph Theory and Combinatorics

This module provides an introduction to a selection of research-informed topics in pure mathematics, and aims to extend and complement ideas introduced in years 1 and 2. It provides a blend of mathematical concepts and techniques that are widely applicable in areas such as data science, operational research, chemistry, engineering, computer science, information technology, statistics, sociology and genetics.

Cryptography and Quantum Computation

This module provides an introduction to the theory of cryptography and quantum computation. These topics will build on and extend your knowledge and understanding of key mathematical ideas that were introduced in the earlier years of the course.

Computational Statistics and Data Analysis

Explore topics from computational statistics and statistical models relevant to modern applications, with an emphasis on developing solid conceptual understanding of these methods through applications.

Communicating Science and Technology

An opportunity for you to gain valuable transferable skills working as a ‘student-tutor’ with teachers in local schools or to work on a community-based project.

How you’re taught

You’ll spend between 14 and 16 hours every week in lectures, seminars, practical sessions, and workshops. The seminar groups are sessions where you’ll meet with your lecturer and small groups to discuss any problems, or work through challenging topics. The rest of your time will be spent carrying out independent study such as reading textbooks and lecture notes, and working on exercises.

How will I be assessed?

We want you to graduate with a range of transferable skills, so all of the mathematics modules have two or three assessment components that help you to demonstrate your knowledge in a variety of ways. As well as traditional exams and in-class tests, you’ll complete assignments and group projects, and give presentations. In your final year you’ll also complete your dissertation with the support of your personal tutor.

On this course, after your second year, you will have the opportunity to take a year's work placement (sandwich placement). This will give you the chance to gain vital experience and put your knowledge into practice. You're also twice as likely to secure a graduate job within six months if you take a work placement.

Most study modules will recommend one or more core text books, which most students choose to purchase. Book costs vary and further information is available in the University’s bookshop. Our libraries provide a good supply of essential text books, journals and materials (many of which you can access online) – meaning you may not need to purchase as many books as you might think! Field trips

All essential field trip costs will be included in your course fees. There may be the opportunity to take part in optional field trips, which do incur additional costs.

The University allocates an annual printing and copying allowance of £20 depending on the course you are studying. Students will also be required to pay additional costs for printing, poster preparation and final dissertation copies in their final year - estimated costs approximately £20 - £50. Students will require a basic scientific calculator for use in examinations (e.g. Casio 83 or 85 series, approximately £15).
