Makerere University, Uganda

In 2020, Makerere University was recognised as one of NTUs Institutional International Partnerships. With this recognition the partnership has ambitious plans to expand activity across all NTU Schools, ensuring a multi-link, interdisciplinary approach to partnership, research and collaboration.

Our collaboration with Makerere University

Since NTU’s first visit to Makerere University (MAK) in Uganda in 2010, the partnership between NTU's School of Social Sciences and the Makerere University School of Public Health has grown from strength to strength. Collaborative activity has focused on research, staff and student exchange, staff development and a series of projects with international partners and the local community.

Dr Linda Gibson (NTU) and Dr David Musoke (MAK) fostered the initial link and have nurtured the partnership over the past decade. They have recently secured ongoing research funding to support their work, including:

  • strengthening the community health workers' training programme in the Wakiso district of Uganda; and
  • cardiovascular disease prevention; a project being undertaken in consortium with four other universities.

The partnership has produced 7 collaborative publications in journals that include BMJ Global Health, Africa Health Sciences (2019) and Globalization and Health (2018, 2016) and has secured over £1.8M of funding from bodies such as THET/DFID, British Academy, EU Horizon 2020, Erasmus+ and the Fleming Trust.

This work is being progressed through NTUs Centre for Public Health and Health Systems, which aims for excellence and impact which focuses on continuing the research themes of existing partnerships: community engagement, health promotion and prevention, and primary care through investing in teaching, research training and placement opportunities.

The work Dr Gibson and Dr Musoke began in Public Health has recently been broadened to include a One Health approach, and now involves academics from across the disciplines of Nursing, Microbiology, Pharmacy, Animal and Agricultural Studies and Environmental Sciences.

This multi-disciplinary approach is reflected in the 2020-23 Erasmus+ ICM award (of €716,000) which will involve staff and researcher mobility between the institutions across a number of subjects.  Read more about the award here.

Makerere University is currently ranked among the top universities in Africa.

Naomi – Martha Muwanguzi - Duncan

Following the signing of the renewed Memorandum of Understanding, Mrs Martha Muwanguzi, the Head of Makerere University International Office, was keen to stay in Nottingham for more than one reason.

Not only did she want to learn how NTU supports its international students and to discuss further partnership initiatives, but also to visit her son and daughter (Duncan and Naomi), both of whom were studying MSc in Real Estate on our City Campus. Read more about this story on the link below.
