Xian Shao - Design Thinking
Our courses are arranged in two-week blocks. You can choose one course from either block, or combine two courses from blocks 1 and 2 to create a 3 or 4-week programme.
A typical 2-week course gives you 10 UK credits or 5 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits that you may be able to use towards your degree.
You'll receive an official NTU transcript and a certificate of completion after satisfactorily completing your course(s).
The courses are designed for international and UK students who have completed at least one year of undergraduate studies.
Courses for 2021 Global Summer School
*This course is non-credit bearing and is an option to students taking any Block Two course, except 'Fashion Knitwear'. The course can be one, or two weeks however for 'Design and Innovation in Business' it is only available as a one week option.

You’ll receive an email with the instructions on how to enrol when we've received your payment and confirmed your place on the course.
Our courses require a minimum number of students to run. We will let you know as soon as this number has been reached.

Before your course starts, we will send your timetable and instructions about where to go on your first day.
You'll also be contacted by your NTU student buddy.

English language requirements
You'll need a good level of English proficiency for these courses.
For most courses you'll need an IELTS 6.0, or equivalent.
Because there is a little variation across subject areas please always check the course page(s) as well.
English language requirements for the Global Summer School
Our Summer School courses are delivered in English and so to be successful and get the most out of your experience you'll need to have a good proficiency in English. Our requirements are listed in the table below.
Most courses require the equivalent of IELTS 6.0 but there are some exceptions so please do check our course descriptions.
We accept a variety of evidence of English Language qualifications, please email us if you'd like to check your qualification.
If you're booking as a group, please contact us to talk about specific language needs.
We are also offering an English and Cultural Studies course as part of our Summer School if you would like to refresh and improve your English.

Fees and what they include
Tuition fees start at £990 for a two-week course, and this includes your social programme.
See below for a list of our standard tuition fees, what's included, and any discounts open to you.
Always check on the course information as there is a little variation in fees across subject area.

- a 10% 'early-bird' payment discount is available to you if you pay in full, or a 10% non-refundable deposit, by 31 March 2021
- a 10% discount is open to you if you're a current NTU student or an NTU or Global Summer School alumni
- if you decide to study two 2-week courses (four weeks in total) you'll receive a 20% discount on your second course (as above).

What your fees include
- full social and evening events programme, supported by NTU student buddies

Please note that accommodation is not included so you'll also need to pay for your room during the summer school.
You'll be living in the centre of Nottingham, on our City Campus or within a 10 minute walk of it, with easy transport links to our Clifton and Brackenhurst Campuses (if your course is based there). See images of our Byron Residence and Liberty Point accommodation, both of which have 24-hour security and reception.
You'll be in walking distance of the main bus and train stations in Nottingham, so you can easily explore the surrounding areas.
You'll have a single room with an en-suite bathroom and share the living and kitchen areas.
When you arrive there'll be a pack of bedding and kitchen equipment (pots, pans, utensils) in your room.
You can expect to pay between £145 - £185 per week for your room, and you'll also need to pay for your food.

Summer school has a very busy social programme, including:

They'll be in touch before you arrive to say hello and help answer any questions you might have.
They'll be there to welcome you at your induction, take you on a campus tour and show you the best places in Nottingham to shop, eat, drink and visit. They'll accompany you on all social activities and may even be studying with you in your classes.

Frequently asked questions on Global Summer School
1. Can I get a refund if I have to cancel?
If you wish to withdraw from your course(s) please email us soon as possible. Requests for a refund will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The following will be applicable:
- If you cancel before 1st April = 90% refund of course and accommodation fee
- If you cancel between 1st April and 1st June, you will receive a 50% refund of course and accommodation fee
- If you cancel after 1st June – no refund of course or accommodation fee
The following exceptional circumstances will be considered, on a case by case basis, for a full refund – supporting evidence will be requested:
- Extenuating personal circumstances (for example, illness which prevents you from travelling, bereavement etc.)
- Visa application refusal – however, refunds will not be considered if visas have been applied for too late or are the wrong type.
2. What happens if my course is cancelled by NTU?
We need a minimum number of students in order for our courses to run. If there are not enough students, the course will be withdrawn, and you will be able to either choose a different course or receive a full refund of your tuition and accommodation fees.
3. When shall I make travel arrangements?
In order to run, our courses need a minimum number of students. We will confirm this as soon as we can, at least four-weeks before the course start date. We do not advise you to book any flights until you have received this confirmation as any expenses made, other than course and housing fees, will not be reimbursed if a course has to be cancelled.
4. Do I need a visa to participate in the summer school?
If you do not hold a UK, EU or EEA passport you must check with the UK Border Agency regarding visas before you make your booking, you may require a Short-Term Study Visa. Allow yourself plenty of time to prepare your documents and submit your application. You can apply online for a visa up to three months before your date of travel to the UK and you should get a decision within three weeks. Once you have paid your tuition fee you will receive an invitation letter which you can use to support your visa application.
6. When will I get my invitation letter?
You will receive your invitation letter when we have received your tuition fee payment. This invitation letter can be used to support your short-study visa application.
7. Where will the Summer School take place?
The Summer School will take place at Nottingham Trent University’s City, Clifton and Brackenhurst Campuses depending on your subject.
8. How do I get to Nottingham?
Nottingham is very well connected to different ports of arrival, but it is worth planning your journey to NTU ahead of time. The closest airport to NTU is East Midlands Airport, which mainly handles flights to and from Europe. The closest International airports you may fly into are Birmingham and Manchester. Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted are all close to London. Many students prefer to travel by coach or train from these airports to Nottingham. There is lots of useful information on our travelling to Nottingham webpage however, please note that we do not usually arrange airport pick-ups unless you are travelling as a group of 10 or more. 9. When should I arrive at Nottingham?
You can check in to our accommodation from 5pm on the Saturday, or anytime on the Sunday, before the start of your course.
10. If my flight arrives at midnight, can I check in?
Yes, our accommodation has a 24-hour reception – but please do let us know in advance so that we can inform our accommodation teams to expect you.
11. Can I stay longer in the accommodation?
You are expected to leave our on-campus accommodation by mid-day on the day after your summer school course finishes (Saturday). You may be able to stay for one or two nights longer however, you will need to pay for extra nights’ accommodation and will depend on the availability of rooms. Please contact the Summer School Coordinator as soon as possible if you think you may need to stay longer.
12. What are the eating arrangements in the accommodation?
Our accommodation is self-catering – which means you cook your own food. Kitchens are shared and are equipped with basic utensils. You can buy any utensils you need that are missing from your kitchen at low cost from shops in the city centre – please ask your student buddy! You can buy food from our Students Union shop, which is underneath your accommodation, and just a short walk away are two supermarkets, with specialist food shops within the city centre. There are lots of cafes, fast-food, bars and restaurants in Nottingham.
13. What will the weather be like in July?
The weather in the UK can be unpredictable! The average temperature in July is 19 – 20˚C but it can get to around 26-28 ˚C. It can also rain unexpectedly! We recommend bringing light clothes which you can layer, and a raincoat / umbrella!
14. Are there heaters in the rooms?
There are heaters in your rooms but the weather in Nottingham in July is a nice temperature and so you shouldn’t need to use them!
15. Can I change my course once I have arrived at NTU?
If you attend the first session of your course and find your choice unsuitable you may be able to transfer onto an alternative course which runs at the same time if you inform the Summer School Coordinator by 12noon on the first day of the course. This is subject to you meeting any prerequisites
for the new course and there being places available on it.
16. What happens if I am late to my first class?
Students arriving after mid-day on the first day of the course may not be accepted. If there are exceptional circumstances that mean you will be arriving late on your first day please contact the Summer School Coordinator as soon as possible.
17. How many credits will I receive for my Summer School course?
Most of our Summer School courses are credit bearing. Please check the course description online. Credits range from 10 to 15 UK credits. 10 UK credits are equivalent to 5 ECTS. Upon successful completion of your course you will receive a ‘Certificate of Completion’ to say that you have attended and achieved a level of attainment expected by your tutor, and, in September, after the Board of Examiners have met, you will be emailed a transcript confirming that you’ve passed your course and the number of credits you have achieved.
18. How are courses assessed?
Each summer school course is assessed differently and may include doing an individual or group presentation, producing and displaying work such as photos, models, clothing and photo books, or writing a report. Students must attend all classes and pass the assessment to be awarded credits.
19. Do I need to attend all of my classes?
Yes, all of your classes are compulsory and you will be expected to arrive at your class on time. All students must conduct themselves in an appropriate manner – students who are disruptive may be given a warning and asked to leave the classes. Please ensure your mobile phone is switched off unless you are using it for your class.
20. Do I need to bring anything with me for my course?
Most teaching materials are included in your tuition fee. If you do need to bring anything with you for your course we will let you know in advance.
