Student Support Services
  • Who can attend a course?

Anyone can enrol so long as they are aged 18 or over and have read the course description and booking terms and conditions.

  • I’m under 18. Why can't I attend?

Our evening, Saturday and summer courses are aimed at adult learners. However, we do offer a parallel summer programme for those aged 15 - 17. These courses are great for building a portfolio and experiencing art and design school for the first time. Find out more about courses for 15 - 17 year olds.

  • I'm 80. Can I attend?

Absolutely! Our courses are open to adults of all ages and experience.

  • When should I book?

Our classes are practical which means we have to limit their size. To avoid disappointment we suggest you book early. We take bookings up until the day the course starts so long as there is space.

  • How do I know if there is space on a course?

All courses are online with live registers. Once the limit is reached the status on the website will change to 'fully booked' and a waiting list will begin.

  • How much do the courses cost?

The price of each course is advertised online. The fee is the same for everyone who attends regardless of age, nationality or employment status. All fees include VAT.

  • Are there any discounts?

We don't offer help with fees for our short courses. However, we do offer a 10% discount for returning customers, NTU staff, NTU students and NTU alumni on our creative short course programme. This discount does not apply to the University Language Programme.

  • What will I receive at the end of the course?

The tutor will present you with a certificate of attendance if you attend 80% or more of a course and have completed the projects to a satisfactory level.

  • How many people are in a class?

It depends on the subject. For computer courses the classes are usually seven or eight people, for practical photography about ten or eleven and for studio-based classes about 15.

  • Is there accommodation for short course students?

We offer accommodation during the summer only. You can find out more on our short course booking website. We are unable to offer University accommodation during term time.

If you are aged 16 or 17 you will need a parent/guardian to complete a consent form on your behalf.

  • Where do the courses take place?

The courses take place in the same studios and workshops that our full-time students use at our city centre site.

  • Do I need a portfolio to do a short course?

You do not need to be interviewed or show a portfolio to attend a short course. The course description will describe who the course is aimed for; some will be for professionals, some for beginners and some will be open to a a mix of abilities and backgrounds.

  • What do I bring with me?

As well as the course description the website also lists what you need to bring with you on the first day of your course, and what you might need as the course progresses. The materials lists will therefore help you understand how practical a course will be.

  • Is there support for people with a disability?

We are committed to making reasonable adjustments whenever practical to our short courses. If you have any questions or wish to check access or support then please contact us. We will liaise with our Student Support Service who are in contact with outside agencies and who might be able to support customers with additional requirements.

  • Can I use the NTU facilities and library?

You only have access to the studios or workshops during your designated class time. However, you can access our city centre library for reference and research (but you can't reserve items or take them away).
