If you're interested in challenging yourself in a skilled ensemble, audition for our award-winning Chamber Choir and perform across the world.
What can I expect?
Our Chamber Choir will push you to master everything from baroque to contemporary music, whilst having fun and meeting other students and staff from across NTU. Led by our Director of Music, Matthew Hopkins, we're a close-knit group who work together to create an incredible sound.
As one of around 25 experienced singers, you'll have to audition to get a place and be accomplished at sight-reading.
In July 2018 the Chamber Choir won a silver medal at the World Choir Games in Tshwane, South Africa, following a 2016 win at the North Wales International Choral Festival. We've performed at venues such as Barcelona's Sagrada Familia and Monserrat Abbey. And every year, we set off on an international tour, taking in the sights of countries from India to China.
How do I join?
Who can join?
The Chamber Choir welcomes NTU students and staff.
Is there an audition?
Yes. To be eligible to audition you'll need to sing to Grade 6 standard or above and be able to sight-read to Grade 5 standard or above. You don't need to have taken exams.
Our next auditions will take place on Wednesday 7 October 2020, between 10 am - 5 pm at the Music Centre, City Campus. You'll be allocated a ten minute slot and perform a piece of music (of your choice) and complete a short sight-reading test.
Complete our online form to secure your audition slot.
If you're successful, you won't have to re-audition every year. But you will have to join for at least the entire academic year or the duration of your exchange (if you're on a Study Abroad or Erasmus programme). You'll also need to attend performances and rehearsals, and join the larger NTU Choir.
How much does it cost?
There is no membership cost for the Chamber Choir.
You will need to supply your own concert uniform, which consists of a smart black trousers and shoes, and purchase a Chamber Choir performance shirt (£15).
Rehearsals take place on Wednesdays (term time only) between 2.15 pm and 4.15 pm in University Hall on City Campus, or via Zoom for those needing to join virtually.
Our first rehearsal will take place on Wednesday 14 October.
For more information about rehearsals email email@example.com or call 0115 848 4570.
