If you're interested in challenging yourself in a skilled ensemble, audition for our award-winning Chamber Choir and perform across the world.
Our Chamber Choir will push you to master everything from baroque to contemporary music, whilst having fun and meeting other students and staff from across NTU.
As one of around 25 singers, you'll have to audition to get a place and be accomplished at sight-reading.
In July 2018 we won a silver medal at the World Choir Games in Tshwane, South Africa, following a 2016 win at the North Wales International Choral Festival. We've performed at venue's such as Barcelona's Sagrada Familia and Monserrat Abbey. And every year, we set off on an international tour, taking in the sights of countries from India to China.
How do I audition?
We hold auditions in the week after Welcome Week in Term One. You'll need to sing at Grade 6 standard and be able to sight-read to Grade 5 or Grade 6 standard. You don't need to have taken exams.
During the audition, you'll sing a song of your choice and perform a short piece of sight-reading.
If you're successful, you won't have to re-audition every year. But you will have to join for at least the entire academic year or the duration of your exchange (if you're on a Study Abroad or Erasmus programme). You'll also need to attend performances and rehearsals, and join the larger NTU Choir.
If you're thinking about joining, but would like to find out more, you're welcome to observe a rehearsal. Contact the Music Centre to arrange in advance.
Rehearsals take place on Wednesdays (term time only) between 2.15 pm – 4.15 pm in the Ensemble Room at the Music Centre on the City Campus.
There's no membership fee to be involved in Chamber Choir, but members will have to buy a special shirt for your uniform. If you choose to join the Chamber Choir's international tour, you will need to pay a contribution towards this. However, these are often subsidised, and we fundraise throughout the year to make sure they are as affordable as possible.
Where do you perform?
You'll be heard at NTU lunchtime concerts, and seasonal events including the Christmas Spectacular and our annual free lunchtime concert at the Royal Concert Hall. As part of this tight-knit group, you'll also play at various UK and European events. Previous performances include:
- March 2019: Rutter's Requiem at Southwell Minster
- October 2018: Sunrise Mass at Southwell Minster
- March 2017: Mass in Blue at Southwell Minster
- December 2017: Christmas Lunchtime Concert at the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham
- November 2016: North Wales Choral Festival at Venue Cymru, Llandudno.
- April 2016: with Russell Watson, during his tour, at the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham
- April 2016: Dream of Gerontius with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham
- April 2016: The Sagrada Familia, Monserrat Abbey, Barcelona Cathedral
We also arrange international performances every year. In 2019/20, the choir will travel to Belgium to compete in the World Choir Games.
In previous years, the choir travelled to China to perform in Beijing and Shanghai, won a silver medal at the 2018 World Choir Games in South Africa, and travelled to India to sing in locations including Delhi and Chandigarh.
Other trips have visited Prague, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Budapest.
All areas of the Music Centre are accessible for wheelchair users. Accessible toilets are available on the ground floor and there is a lift to all levels of the building.
