String Sinfonia

Strings add emotion, power and excitement to a whole range of classical and contemporary songs. Join our String Sinfonia, and make friends while captivating audiences.

What can I expect?

If you want to perform in a string ensemble, our String Sinfonia, led by musician and violin tutor Rob Rosa, is a great chance to play in a group of enthusiastic musicians.

How do I join?

Who can join?
Our String Sinfonia welcomes NTU students, staff and members of the local community.

Is there an audition?
There is no audition to join the String Sinfonia.

What experience do I need?
You should be able to read music, and play your instrument to around Grade 6 standard, but you don't need to have taken exams.

What if I don't have an instrument?
You may be able to hire an instrument from NTU Music. Email or call into the Music Centre to find out more.

I'm ready to join – how do I sign up and how much does it cost?
You can purchase your membership through the NTU Online Store.

Membership for the academic year costs:

  • £20 for NTU Students
  • £40 for NTU staff and NTU alumni
  • £80 for community members

If you join after Christmas, the cost is discounted by a third.

What's included in my membership?
Your membership includes rehearsals and performances. You will need to supply your own concert uniform, which consists of a smart black shirt and trousers, with black shoes.

Rehearsal information

Rehearsals take place on Wednesdays (term time only) between 6.30 pm and 8 pm in the Studio at the Music Centre on City Campus.

The String Sinfonia plays regularly at our free lunchtime concerts, as well as other NTU events. It also combines with the Concert Band to perform as the Concert Orchestra, for special events.
