The NTU Choir joins the BBC Concert Orchestra in an epic evening of choral classics
Published: 06/12/2024
On Wednesday 4 December the NTU Choir joined the BBC Concert Orchestra, University of Nottingham Choir, and Choristers of Southwell Minster to perform Carl Orff’s choral classic, Carmina Burana.
This concert is just one of the highlights of the partnership between the BBC Concert Orchestra and Universities for Nottingham, which aims to give students the opportunity to engage with a world-class orchestra through concerts, collaborative projects, and beyond, whilst also developing and enhancing the cultural life of Nottingham.
The evening began with performances from each of the university choirs. The NTU Choir, conducted by Director of Music Matthew Hopkins, performed Jenni Brandon’s Tonight A Stolen Moment – telling the story of an immigrant family displaced from their home.
In the second half, the choirs were joined by musicians from the internationally recognised orchestra and guest soloists, led by conductor George Jackson in a powerful and stirring interpretation of Orff’s masterpiece.
The combined power of the choirs with the BBC Concert Orchestra made for an awe-inspiring experience for the 1800-plus audience members in the Royal Concert Hall and I encourage a listen to the BBC Radio 3 broadcast or listen again on BBC Sounds.
I’m particularly proud of the NTU choir presenting the UK premier of Jenni Brandon’s work. The partnership with the BBC Concert Orchestra and the University of Nottingham is a great example of collaborative endeavour for the benefit of our university community and the city’s cultural offer.
