Overview
The Department of Social and Political Sciences is inviting applications for a PhD project focusing any issue to be investigated via feminist lenses in the broad fields of politics, international relations or and/or security studies. The Department comprises internationally recognised researchers working on interdisciplinary projects focusing on feminist theory, security studies, international relations and sociology.
We invite the candidates to submit applications on a project focussed on the topic of their choice that will meet the following criteria:
- The project will use feminist theories as a primary mode of inquiry (for example postcolonial feminism, feminist institutionalism, etc.);
- The project will broadly fit within the disciplines of politics, international relations or security studies;
- The project will utilise feminist methodologies.
Research design
Either quantitative or qualitative methods, or a combination of approaches, will be possible. It is expected that the applicant will develop a research design that is well-matched to the project aim. The project is not restricted to an examination or a specific country or time period.The successful candidate is an individual highly motivated to deliver an excellent research project informed by feminist theories and methodologies. They will be joining an exciting research culture and a community of over 130 doctoral students. They will be encouraged to present and publish their work at international conferences and in leading journals.

Entry qualifications
Entrants must have a first/undergraduate Honours degree, with an Upper Second Class or a First Class grade, in Politics, International, Relations, Security Studies, Sociology, Social Policy or a related discipline. Entrants with a Lower Second Class grade at first degree must also have a postgraduate Master’s Degree at Merit or Commendation. Evidence of knowledge of feminist theories and methodologies is desirable.

Fees and funding
This PhD project is generously supported by a donation from the family of Dr Ros Hague.
This support will be in the form of a fees only scholarship at Home rates. Mode of study can be either full time or part time.
